Nordstrom has a Vaneli Serene in your colors. They are quilted but nappa leather and while not quite your Chanel flat, have a similar vibe. No bow however.

When I first had a little money of my own, Vaneli shoes from Nordstrom were a big deal. And comfortable! Or, at least they were quite comfortable even in their heels at the age I was then 😊 Fall Preview Sales? We always looked first to see which Vanelis for that season might be previewed - marked down.

@morz8 - Washington Coast back in the day, I had the best looking pair of Vaneli shoes! IIRC, they were comfortable, too. But at that age, all shoes were comfortable!

@Kswl, not what I’m looking for, as you noted, but those are the cutest cap-toed MJs!

For me, the internet is what has affected finding good deals for antiques and vintage things, not ”rich” people.

A favorite place of ours to shop for furniture and decor is a local antique mall. I used to find so many great deals there, but now sellers see bloated prices for similar items on Chairish, 1stDibs, etc, and use them as their guide. I would, too, I’m not angry at them … I just miss my good deals. :)

My DD and SIL bought their first house last year. They looked and looked for an older fixer-upper, but all were out of their price range. They ended up buying a mid-century house from a flipper and are actually planning to add some of the old character back.

Carharrt (and Dickies) are a big thing in my area; I don’t find the prices have gone up from normal.

I love our farmers market and same as above — the prices are still reasonable.

Well, WOW, that was one of the more cool things I have experienced recently. Up until the time it was supposed to start, it was mostly an overcast day. Then, suddenly right on cue as it began, the clouds cleared. The sunlight was almost surreal - the intensity was amazing - and then it was enthralling to watch over the next hour as the totality increased. When the total eclipse happened, it was so amazing to see darkness descend in the middle of the day - all the outside solar lights came on as we sat in the darkness. Plus hearing the cheering and bustle from nearby places where people were congregating. I had a perfect view from my backyard deck, and was wonderful to sit in my garden to experience the whole thing.

Have you joined a facebook group for artists? Just to get some inspiration. I belong to three, including one for photographers. I think you would really enjoy the experience.

You will also need to develop a signature style, which should be written at one of the bottom corners of every piece. The title can be written on the back, on a card affixed to the back, or on the front of the mat should you go that route.

Both really nice, but I love the first one! Is it a nod to the northern lights? Seeing them is on my bucket list.

Yes. I've done two other northern lights but this is my favorite. I get inspired by looking at photos online of different places.

Oh goodness. Really sad to hear this news. But it does seem that the rescue center could have done better job to place Florence in an appropiate new home situation, given her history. I think the dog's dream home is a quiet person with a tiny patch of a back yard for potty, then back to naps and more quiet time, inside.

I think some are making up information about these insects, lol. The larvae drop to the ground after hatching, burrow into the ground where they feed on grass roots, tree and shrub roots for the duration of the nymphal life. Then, they emerge from the soil and climb on any vertical surface order to escape their nymphal exoskeleton. Does not have to be a tree.

Once their wings have hardened, they will seek someplace more suitable, both for mating, feeding and egg laying. Cicada are perfectly capable of flying. I have found their little husks on brick walls, metal poles, fence posts, etc.

They are vulnerable from humans while still underground, where common pesticides easily kill them. I’d be tempted to use SurroundWP on young trees to prevent egg laying damage. It is used in nurseries to prevent damage to their young trees and shrubs. SurroundWP is something I always keep on hand.

PROTECT YOUNG TREES AND SHRUBS.

I downplayed the risk because I didn't remember it being very bad 17 years earlier - well, 17 years earlier I mostly collected rare perennials and had a garden that was over 10X smaller in size and plant variety. Fortunately they only killed a couple small, 1 gallon potted Prunus mume, but they damaged a bunch of other stuff. Obviously, I wish I'd protected more things.

The news is sounding the alarm

>>> first .. i am stunned.. that the news whores are trying to gin up some plague of the biblical proportions.. though they cant make any religious references ..

second... IPM .. integrated pest management dictates that you REACT.. and only react to an actual ongoing event;... we dont worry nor react until something is actually happening... we dont ever over react to the 'news' ....

i would bet.. 99.999% of us.. will barely notice anything out of the ordinary ...... and the news will report about the .0001 percent ... whatever happens will be very regional.. and limited ...

soo.. bottom line.. dont worry abut it.. and dont do anything until you actually see a bug. and see some type of SIGNIFICANT damage.. and then we will consider reacting..

report back on 8/1 and let us know ... be sure to tell me i was wrong.. and the plague is hitting your yard.. ill suck it up and admit i was wrong ... lol

Here's my apple tree the last year I owned my old place.

~40 years old 'HaralRed'.

Never did anything to it. No sprays, no prune, no nothing, just enjoyed the Apples. ;-)

Chirping smoke detectors are a pain but so are the backup batteries for the cable company. One has been chirping at my moms for months. Its in the basement so we don't hear it.

I was required to have a smoke detector on every level and every bedroom to sell her house. Altogether, seven of them. That should be quite a chorus when they all die together. It will be someone else’s problem then.

Stay off ladders!

“Do horses have bffs, like I’ve read cows do? Do they dislike other horses? How do they show that?”

Absolutely. And sometimes it’s another animal — we had horses who had goat friends, donkey friends, dogs, etc who didn’t like to be apart. It’s very sweet. They are very social herd animals and don’t like to be alone.

Yes, some horses can very much dislike other horses, to the point of wanting to injure or kill. They show it in various ways — stomping, kicking, biting. Especially studs, who see each other as competition. And some horses (especially geldings) are docile and get along with everyone.

”How much do they sleep? Do they sleep when it is dark or do they graze or move around in the dark? Do they have good eyesight for nighttime wandering?”

Sleep times vary, depending on lifestyle. They sleep and nap at any hour, as well as graze. I don’t think they have any sort of special night vision.

Do they need to be washed, or just brushed? How frequently?”

This depends on various factors. Our show horses were extensively groomed daily. Working horses would be bathed or brushed well after riding. Pasture horses were brushed daily, mainly to keep their manes and tails tangle/bur free.

“Are horses bothered by mice or other animals?”

Some are, some aren’t. Each horse has its own unique disposition … some are spooked by lots of things, some are super laid-back and calm, some are in-between those. A lot of horses are spooked by trailers, crossing water, loud noises, etc.

“How long do they live on average? Excuse my indiscretion, but how are they disposed of after death?”

That widely varies, but on average ours usually lived into their 20s if no major health problems or injuries. We sometimes buried ours way off in unused pasture areas, but usually their bodies were hauled off to be disposed of. It is very, very, very hard watching a horse be put down.

Misc facts:

Horses usually have a favorite person, just like a cat or dog. They can be very loving, greeting you happily when they see you.

They cannot throw up — they get what is called ”colic” and it can be deadly if not quickly treated. Another deadly thing for them is if they ”founder”. It’s a hoof disease with no cure.

Horses can be very playful and it’s so fun and endearing. They might play with giant balls or other toys. I had a horse who would race me down the fence line. We’d stand still, I’d yell ”Go!”, and off we went. He was something. :D He also bucked me off every time I tried to ride him.

.

We showed (halter, cutting, reining, etc), had working ranch horses, boarded horses, gave lessons. We mostly had Quarter Horses, Paints, Palominos, Appaloosas, and Percheron draft horses. My brother competed in rodeos and still judges them. My uncle is a very well known trainer who has been on TV. My late DH and I moved to Europe when western riding started to become popular there. We trained and showed horses and gave lessons. We had a kind of celebrity status as we were ”real cowboys” from Texas. :D It was a lot of fun, a great experience.

Best advice I can give to someone who has never been around horses: don’t assume one will be friendly and calm. They can be dangerous and unpredictable. Always approach one with someone who knows them. Don’t ever walk up behind one — they don’t have good side vision and could kick out if startled. It hurts tremendously to get kicked! Some would never do that, but some will.

They’re majestic, beautiful, fun, expensive. They’ll steal your heart forever. 💗
