Not crazy about any of them. I do not understand what people see in wood cabinets. If you cook as I do and spend as much in the kitchen, you would know that in spite of the best range hood, the cabinets near you stove get very greasy and are very hard to clean, and then there all those little edges to deal with. My dream... a kitchen full of Scavolini cabinets. Smooth surfaces and a totally modern look.
This was one of my favorite inspirations...
Black can be traditional or contemporary. Different. My kitchen is a dark grey (and towards an olive). The 7 foot window opposite the range is on the south side of the house and a white kitchen would be blinding! We still need to put the crown moulding on....
We remodeled our dated 70s kitchen a year ago. When trying to decide overall color scheme, we took into consideration many factors to include: natural light availability, trinity of color play (walls, cabinets, countertop), staying power of design, ease of cleaning, elegance level, and of course: BUDGET.
Our kitchen was typical ranch style inspired galley kitchen with a focus on ergonomic and efficient layout as it was U-shaped. We were fortunate to have a large window above sink and plenty of natural light coming in from adjoining dining area via two other large windows. As per the style of the 70s our kitchen counter and backsplash were covered by 6x6 yellow tile... Ughhh!! Kitchen appliances were outdated as well and were a mix of manufacturers.
We made no change to the overall footprint as the layout really worked well. Additionally, the cabinets were very solid and we decided to keep rather than replace at substantial cost savings. All I did was paint them in deep dark grey, almost black color and changed the hardware to brushed nickel look. We did replace counter with quartz Calacatta to include grey veining. We also changed the backsplash to a 3x10 white beveled subway tile. Walls were painted in grey with green undertone. We recently swapped out light pendants to clear glass globes to keep things airy. All appliances upgraded to GE Profile series in black stainless to make overall look cohesive.
We kept a careful eye on budget and worked with our various contractors to make sure we stayed within parameters... mostly. The final look is... stunning!
I'm not a hot weather person .... never have been. Not a big summer fan for that reason. I'll take snowy cold weather over hot -- I can always put more clothes on. (Really, the only thing I hate about life in the Great White North is icy roads in the winter.) Spring and fall are my favorite times of year though. My mom is in her 80s. My dad was military so we moved around a bit. When asked, she still says she'd rather put up with a place that has snow because at least 6months of the year, all the bugs are dead. :-D
'Rawketgrl' I heartily agree! & your photos are gorgeous!! Beautiful, wonderful, glorious SNOW! Especially in the mountains. People tell me 'just wait until you get older you will begin to hate snow & cold'. And I keep getting older and keep loving it same as I have since a child. Window gazing, Snowshoeing, hiking, refreshing brisk crisp clean air, the look & scent of fireplaces both indoors and out, glowing sunsets make the snowy world look magically pink, white outs when the world finally stops & pauses, joyfully stuck inside watching movies eating popcorn, drinking hot cocoa & hot cider, candles burning, sweaters, snuggly down coats, shoveling {yes I love to shovel --you read that correctly} , cuddling keeping loved ones warm, scent of pot roast braising & stolen baking. Snuggling into a warm, soft, comfy bed at the end of the day. Winter is too short and I don't want it to end. I also adore fall! The scent of leaves, gaining an hour of sleep, shorter days, longer evenings! etc. etc. etc.
Snowy pine trees!
does anyone have a picture of a portion of their home with the Frontier Tahoe Hickory that was mentioned above? we are having a home built right now and chose Tahoe. Would love to see in more larger space. Thank you. robert
Landline phones are important for hardwired burglar alarm systems. I personally don’t trust battery alarm systems. Satellite cable can go out on cloudy or stormy days, so they are not reliable either. Of course, things are changing and improving every year. Front door and other exterior camera systems can communicate with the homeowner and the security company.
For now, though, we will keep our land line.
Nope, no landline. My Husband and I got married in 2007 and just never got one.
I like mine because it's pretty and its a smart house!
I lost my job and my home 9 years back when my 38 y/o husband passed unexpectedly d/t an undiagnosed medical condition. I never thought I would ever be a homeowner again. I applied for a mortgage on a whim. At this point I was debt free so my credit was pretty good. I got pre approved. I had just switched jobs so the mortgage company said i had to be at my job 6 months then they would start the process. I found a home that had been on the market for a year without being sold. They took it off the market on halloween. I called the realtor to ask them the next day if they still want to sell it and i gave him my offer. 20 minutes later the realtor called me and said yes they will still it and they took my very first offer. This was in the fall. the sellers knew I couldn't buy it till I was at my job 6 months. The sellers waited 6 months just so I could get it. I love my home and am so proud of it. I have been updating, decorating and remodeling. I love to sit outside and look at my home and yard and the inside as well. it is literally perfect for me! and now comes the clencher... When times were tough I was driving past the house several years earlier. I told my friend as we drove by " If I could just find a house like that my world would be perfect 7 years later I am the proud home owner of that very same house. All the stars were aligned and god was shining down on me. I'm a single mom btw. My prayers were answered. I have a garage, a shed, a big beautiful yard, mature trees. I was also able to save up and pay with cash for all new windows. Im am so happy in my beautiful little forever home ! Also I was offered a lot more of a loan than i really needed. It will be paid off in 10 years. And my interest rate is spectacular. I always felt like you should leave things better than when you found them. A friend called it my Goldilocks home. Not too big, not too little, just perfect.
Dusting: an inane activity-finish and you have to start all over.
The bathroom! I absolutely hate cleaning the bathroom. I do like to cook and we have a dishwasher but I've yet to find a way to get hubby to unload. I actually like loading it because I'm so good at it. I can get lots in it and it always comes out clean so, why can't I get him to do that one thing in the kitchen?
Thank you, I feel much better now.
Cabingirl13 do you have a friend or relative who could show you how to hang your 'hoop' yourself? Wouldn't it be fun to surprise your husband with a night of hoops and dinner in the backyard? Look, sweetheart, I hung the hoop myself. Now let's play HORSE, you go first. That would be a slamdunk.
