Where I live, code would require some sort of railing around your front ”porch”, as it looks to be pretty high off ground level.

You will lose storage, and counter space both, to move to an island. Learn when to leave well enough alone. Just make the peninsula single level.

You could always flip your mattress if it would make you feel better.
