Christa, I think you need some color to cheer up both rooms. Here are items I found on the rainforest site and they are all very inexpensive (I'll throw in the $$ one at the end 😊).

I like the idea of turquoise/teal in both rooms - and I think it would go with the rug you already have on the bathroom floor - but I'd hold off on painting the chandelier - maybe later if needed.

Curtains in the bath - a soft turquoise/teal - not a bright tone:

New towels in the bath (this is a set of 6 - very good price):

New accent pillows for your bed - crazy good prices on the rainforest:

Maybe a small side chair near the windows in the bedroom (these are both amazingly NOT expensive- both on the rainforest site):

They're probably not the highest quality but in a bedroom they won't get heavy use.

And for the splurge item which you really don't need since you already have a very nice one, an unexpected WASHABLE rug in the bathroom. This one is from ruggables.com and it's $$. It's from the Justina Blakeley collection. In a bathroom I think the lowest price option would be fine.

Add a couple of dark turquoise/teal cups or dispensers on the bathroom counter and it will seem like a whole new environment. You can decide on painting the ceiling light fixture later but if you do I suggest making it a muted shade of turquoise or else a very dark tone so it doesn't overpower other things in the room. 😊

When you add teal, make sure to incorporate some white along with it to brighten and lighten things up. For a budget, I'd skip painting. Bathroom, get teal curtains with a white background. These would be great with your rug. Replace the ceiling fixture with something in shiny chrome. This one is $45. As money allows, replace vanity lights with chrome too.

A bright throw and pillows is enough to transform your bed area. Add a bright bowl to the vintage chest near the door. Over time get a few other pieces here and there.

"And I like the color, but I’m wondering if you think its going to limit my fabric choices..."

It might!

It looks rather warm, and a bit sallow with the blues you now have.

Paint is one of the highest impact changes - and I would in no case, let a paint color, paint me right into a corner when spending money on fabric and the labor of upholstery.

Your style is very tastefully traditional, and you clearly love blue!

Your rugs are SO close in look...and the room could use a youthful kick.

Why not a deep blue on the living room walls, and? A great texture in a rug . Sisal or jute? Light and a pale oatmeal linen on the couches? A bit of pattern on some chairs? I think you need to throw some caution to the wind, be a bit less timid. Trust me... it will still be (extremely) in good taste!

I've a man client.....had to jam a change of wall color down his tonsils in a formerly pale beige bedroom . We're waiting on new window shades, but the difference blew his mind. Helped absorb a lot of matched, dark furniture too, bigger and brighter look which stunned him!

Point is don't be chicken : )

Thanks for the excellent suggestions 😊 Our house is a new build so handily the windows only open a tiny amount. Nice and safe for bubs.

I love the idea of having a vintage dresser/chest of drawers! I think that’ll fit perfectly there, and of course would have our cats’ approval. I’ll make sure it is far enough away from the stairs that it can’t be used as a ladder.

Also great idea with baskets of books, a nice way to move them easily about the house as needed. I think what I’ll do is set up a nice comfy chair in bubs’ room (it could be the chaise as suggested here but it just depends on whether we can make it fit nicely)

We just got home from a week away and the second set of neighbors behind us, the ones who told us we dont belong.. have even brighter industrial spot lights they are using shined into our house now. i cant screen off the entire back property which spans 100ft across their two back yards so 🤷🏻‍♀️. i have thermal insulated black out curtains in all of my main level rooms and i still need to make them for the upstairs bedrooms and office. sadly the curtains are extremely effective and we cant open the windows to cool the house at night because of all of the light from the three neighboring houses and the church parking lot lights infront of our house. also the sound of countless dogs barking all night long howling to be let inside the house or from neglect + the illegal drag racing that police know about but never do anything to stop it..

this new light situation is most likely retaliation for me reporting their illegal spot lights to the city.. they are very petty spiteful angry people in this neck of the US. we just got back from my Native born home State and i got to wake up every single morning to the sound of doves or a squirrels using our roof as a bypass freeway to get to his favorite tree. i really domt understamd this stramge phenomena of people leaving their 6,500 kelvin 1500 lumen bright back porch lights on all night long to shine into other peoples houses! i mean i know why the neihbors around me do ot.l because i have spokem to each of them before about shielding the lights and well this is their spiteful way of sticking it to us for stopping them from freely accessing and using our property as their own. we notice all of the lighting trespassing when we are in vacation rentals or hotels, the worst are the National parks camp grounds.. the lighting is just so horrific you cant see any night sky from the newer camp grounds at most of the National park camps in Yellow stone.

The only thing I can think of is to place some aluminum foil or even a mirror in back of your black-out curtains that would reflect the spotlight light back at your neighbor. Maybe even put something similar outside to reflect the spot light back as well. That way, they would get their own light back at them. Not that I would want to have an already bad situation even worse, but at this point, your neighbors are really bad, and would only receive back what they are dishing out to you. I do hope there is a positive solution on the legal end from this situation.

WOW! You ALL are beyond awesome! Thank you so very much for all the comments and suggestions! I don't love the red at all - especially with the orangyness of the floors which seems to clash with the counters. Yes the red is no doubt confusing me! I hope to do a renovation within a couple years but for now your suggestions to paint the walls white, light grey or taupe seem like the easiest and practical solution that will immediately help the kitchen look better. Also, yes 100% agree to get rid of the bathroom light fixture over the kitchen sink. I will eventually replace the ceiling fanwith something more streamlined as suggested or I'll get rid of it all together. I don't love the style of the fan at all but I do like the suggestion of painting the fan blades white until I find something to replace it.

Thank you again for sharing your opinions. Your feedback has helped immensely!

Boxerpal, you have the upbeat, positive, helpful attitude

we need everywhere right now.

Thank you J from Lakes Country.

It takes a lot of courage for people to post asking for help and I think we as a community owe encouragement without viciousness. The old rule. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. And in every single post, there is something to be found that is positive. Just reading above.. Some love the red, some love the ceiling fan, some love the entire space... So many beautiful, creative and wonderful solutions for the OP. I love the ideas flowing.

Positivity?

It is easy to forget that text can come across as rude. I do not mean in this thread. I mean for other threads on Houzz. Sometimes the snarky comments, which deep down offer advice, can come across as mean. If that same comment were spoken in person with a smile or a bit of laughter over a cup of tea it would be perfectly on point. But unfortunately over text it falls flat, cruel and bitter.

But as you can see as you scroll above there are many here who find and focus on the good. The positive solutions, sweet support and even two friends (Jilly and Freedom place 1) offering to go get the Op's place to make it beautiful in person. I love it!!!

Kindness is contagious.

Layer your bed with a throw and additional accent pillows in lighter and darker beige mixed with white (different sizes and fluff them up - feather inserts are the best). Remove the dark fabric in the arch of your window and install linen curtain panels from the ceiling. Install an area rug under the bed (mid to passed end of bed), a long framed art above the headboard. It doesn't look as though you have room for 2 nightstands but I show 2 so you cans see the style.

I keep hard copies in file folders in a cabinet too but have found I'm mostly looking up information electronically because I'm not where the hard copies are kept when I need them. Also, having experienced a couple of major insurance claims, the electronic records are invaluable.

I scan or save major receipts to my computer in File Folders which are organized much like the hard copy folders. I'm a die-hard Quicken fan because I have to look info up all the time and it makes it easy. As transactions get downloaded from banking and credit card companies, I'll attach a copy of important receipts to the transaction.

I can search Quicken for "Appliances" or "Pool Remodel 2023" or "Joe's Plumbing", click on the receipt or reports and see model numbers, supplier names, or detail on repairs made. If more detailed specs are needed, I'll google the model before I look for the hard copy. When we have warranty or insurance claim issues, receipts are ready to be uploaded.

I also periodically take photos of rooms and valuables and save them to the cloud.

Same thing for major repairs, like a new roof or air conditioner......."

So. IT WORKS? : ) Then I'd ask what is the issue? To me, as long as you know where the folders are, you are fine, barring a fire that torches the folders.

Yes, I know what you said in your OP … I agree. Different materials would’ve been better in my mind, too. :)

But if I were able to move plumbing and such, I would have tried to keep the windows more open somehow … maybe a tub under the windows and vanity somewhere else. I’m never one who needs two sinks, which every house of mine has had, so could easily plan for one sink and mirror. Currently, the sink on my side is rarely used, we both use his side. I’d prefer more counter space there instead.

Really great ideas guys. I think I'll take a trip to the stone and tile store this weekend and see if I can find any remnants. Decoupage looks cool but may be above mu skill range. I'm closer inspection of the table I'm not noticing even more damage and cracks in the top veneer. Sadly I think covering it is my only option. Though I think I will try to protect the base so that doesn't get any damage. Unfortunately the top can't be disconnected unless I saw it off

I’ve been to this thread exactly once, haven’t been back because I had done zip. Until last week. I have completely given up my nightly wine, and have walked two miles every day, and we have virtually no sweets in the house. Well, partly because I bought a box of the small chocolate chip cookies from WF two weeks ago and between DH and me, it took a week and a half for them to disappear.

Two breaks in all this: missed the walk one day because I had appointments in the morning and it rained in the afternoon, however, we did use that time to drop off donations around town, so that was healthy for home and mind! And went out to dinner for (my) birthday, I did have a glass of wine and we shared gelato for dessert.

Feels good!

Yes, you've got it, but.......you'll want the ottoman by the lounge chair, and the heavy appearance of the two blue/gray chairs seems like too much for the space.

You'll need some large art in the space, and I see now the TV is placed too high when placed on the console table.

The cabinet by the sliding doors looks to be storing liquor bottles and barware which have to be taken to the kitchen in order to mix drinks, and a giant coffee maker is taking up counter space by the refrigerator. Use the dining space (which is really just a pass through) as a place for a beverage station with an under counter refrigerator, shelves above for decor, coffee cups, wine glasses, etc. It will take pressure off the kitchen and also be near the back yard for any outdoor entertaining.

The best I received is the wooden inlaid tray...it's beautiful and so nicely done.

While not made by the giver, it was custom and I love it...she took the bottle of wine I served at our dinner (it was cobalt blue) and took it to an artisan who pressed it into a serving dish and it came with a serving knife. I love it...such a nice memory of our time together!

Gifts I have made include blankets, hats, cowls, scarfs, needlepoint coasters, baby sweaters and booties, gnome, decoupaged decorative plates, vases, beaded ornaments. I haven't but have thought about making note cards (for old ladies who still send them) using one of my photos. I have made calendars as gifts though in the past using my photos.

Many people I know are craftspeople, so I have gotten a variety of wonderful handmade gifts over the years. Yarn goods, warm sweaters and blankets and the like. A lot of sewn items, probably a best was my second wedding dress, but I also dearly love some of my lounge wear. A smattering of woodworking goods, mostly furniture or kitchen useful with a few trinkets and jewelry. A goodly bunch of ceramics/pottery items. Glass, some of it more functional like drinking vessels, some pretty like jewelry, hair goods, beads. A bunch of hair goods of various materials. Beadwork, needlework, some precious metalwork. Bits of ironwork, leatherwork, weavings of different materials, a tad of random stonework of various kinds. Couple nice pairs of boots/footwear. Some other haberdashery and featherwork. A small handful of musical instruments. Food, lots of food- and lots of brews too. Wine, beer, mead, some other things. A couple nice teas, though more often those have been kind of meh. A nice variety of personal toiletries, though a few of them have been misses with the scent in them. A bunch of garden goods over the years, harvest and plants, homegrown seeds.

My wedding invite suite for my second wedding was handmade and a wonderful gift. The puffy fabric scrapbook from my first wedding not so much, heh. Art can be hit or miss- we have gotten some neat art and some investment art. We aren't fond of the investment art, heh.

I often give food. Sometimes plants or garden goodies. Beadwork, sewn things, needlework.. hair goods. Probably some of the better stuff has been things like embroidered gauntlets or monogramed linens, or a suite of wedding jewels. A couple miniatures have been greatly appreciated. Holiday ornaments have been, but I haven't made any in years. I was pretty happy with an embroidered on leather piece I collaborated with another person on. The person who received it has been wearing it for years :)

@ Eliesha Rae

I wasn't saying you needed to pick a floral bedspread, I was asking what colors you like together, what feeling you were aiming for.

I love layering reds and pinks, or pinks and oranges. I like bright colors, I like muted colors, but I don't usually put them together. There are exceptions, but the values and composition have to be just right. I don't see your bed working well with the comforter.

I don't see any muted shades in the inspiration pictures you showed. I can't find a flower or bird or butterfly with this color combination. I often look to mother nature for guidance on color, she has exquisite taste.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful and thorough response! I think I really do like the idea of black/neutral window treatments, it feels like it grounds the hecticness a bit...

I love what you've put together, but not the lime green - however, you have made me rethink keeping things a bit more tonal, rather than AS contrasty as I had it...

The bedframe is already NEON pink, couldn't be any brighter. Then I was thinking lots of tonal pink/red, with green as the accent colour

I don't own the artwork I've used, it's just to show example of how I could tie the colours together, although I do LOVE the painting above the bed, if I go ahead with this project it might need to go on the wishlist.

I am guessing this is a playroom and catch all room, that you want to turn into a teen bedroom?

If so, get your teen on board. Ask your teen to pick out bedding that she loves and from there everything else will come. Area rug, paint color, art for the walls, etc.

Frame the special art above the fireplace. Then see if you actually need anything else on the mantle. Possibly a basket or plant on the floor next to the fireplace, but without knowing anything else about the room, it’s hard to guess.

I like the marble on your fireplace a lot but it doesn't look good with that wall color. While the painting is special, I don't think it looks great with the marble. I'd find a new location for the painting and paint the walls something that is better with the marble.

Re. upholstered goods

On a side note, I did learn that the quality of the sofa in my formal living room didn't really matter much because it does not get used much. But the quality and durability of the family room upholstered furniture is very important if you don't want it to look tattered within a couple of years.

I found this blog on identifying and finding quality upholstered furniture-

My suggestion is to break up your purchase into two groups. One is upholstery and the other case goods. Then further divide that group into a category of desired durability vs. style. Different rooms can call for different quality/ durability of furniture or emphasis on style over durability.

Unique to my situation was that my family moved alot when I was growing up. Some of the furniture would fit better in our new homes better than others. My take-away was to invest more in furniture pieces that were more portable. That is, the pieces that were more likely to fit in a different sized room and also the style that might fit a different home. If you go on Craigs List you will see examples of expensive furniture people bought that no longer fit, for whatever reason. I try to stay away from purchasing those types of pieces.

Whoever lived here before us had started refinishing the wood trim in the house, but not very well. We took up the task and it made me declare at some point that I didn’t want wood cabinets in the kitchen :). But I am happy with the off-white.

Draw the room. Use a tape measure, Measure every wall, window, opening, and are the french door five feet , six feet etc.

Upload that drawing, neat bold legible as a JPeg in a comment below this one.......you will get a lot more concrete, usable help.

Everything else is to spit in wind. It's guessing..... you need a plan.

Also, post the specs of the 3D printer. Some are very large, very noisy and the projects take many hours/days to print. Some can go into a cabinet, others require ventilation, plus you'll want to anticipate storage needs for the supplies to operate it. Knowing the specs will help drive other decor choices such as storage and soft furnishings to mitigate noise and possible odors.

IMO chrome it is timeless and a master bath is a private space like the bedroom and can be very different than the rest of the house for even hardware.

The other advantage to chrome is that it's the least expensive finish. When outfitting a primary bathroom the savings can add up. I did want some sparkle as others have said, and the cost savings was a bonus when we remodeled two years ago. That bathroom has gray and white tile. DH still likes brushed nickel, though, so that's what's in the secondary bathroom (all white tile). I think gold and black are trendy, but I do like black in some circumstances.

Interest and added life can be achieved in so many ways. I’d pick one or the other option and then enhance with your accessory choices. Decor will also create personality and look for inspiration before you begin.

Molding and a lighter/earthy green for a more contemporary look.

How you treat spaces beside the fireplace is a factor.

Entire room painted green, for a less broken up feel.

Wallpaper is a harder decision style wise, as it has a big impact on cushions, art, drapery and the overall feel of the room.

IMO the FP looks like the odd amn out all alone so I would not make that an accent wall I have no idea why you have all the furniture squeezed in to that narrow space . Life is added with art so wahy start there. What does the green connect to ? You do not pull an accent wall color out of a hat.Waht are the blck boxes on the wall above the TV? I need to see all the walls in this space and taken with a simple lens that does not distort the space .Post those pics here in acomments DO NOT start anothe rpost.

I tried to find a photo of what’s in my head. This is the closest I could find. They’re focused on the flooring but hopefully you can visualize the floor, wood, white linen, and black combo that would work beautifully in your bathroom. 👌

No need to retile. I think the floor is a very nice neutral. The granite is dating the room. Get a new vanity top, lights, and mirrors. Put on a fresh coat of paint. The place will feel new without touching the tile.

Thank you everyone. This has been a great community. I remodeled the entire house down to the studs and added an addition in the back as well with a garage a main bed and bath. Still some work in process but I will be sure to post some more photos when I finalize the landscaping in the front. Thank you again. I was happy to implement some of the great ideas from this group. The neighbors I think were unsure what I was doing at first, but once completed, everyone seemed impressed with the final outcome.

All of those cabinets place the TV too high on the wall.

It would have been nice to have been staggered more. I don't think it is horrible though. Once the vanity , med cabs and lights go in, it might not be so glaring. Right now it is all you have to look at.

Tried to mock it up.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I think the problem is that this particular tile has too few pattern faces. I always pay more for tiles that have more pattern faces and give you less repeated tiles.

I did my marble-look porcelain tiles with the veining going in the same direction. One of my guest bathrooms ...

worthyvess, my comment was directed to all the many pronouncements of what is or is not "on trend," "dated," "out," "passe," and all the other dicta that the design world adopts.

My philosophy is that instead of worrying about what is in or out, decide for yourself what you like and need and can afford. You'll be happier in the long run if you just go with your gut. I've always tried to get the best quality I could afford and keep it for the long haul. I'm sure that someone coming into my house right now would turn up their nose at the 18th century reproduction cherry furniture with cabriole legs and broken pediments, raised paneled fireplace mantels, pumpkin pine flooring and trim, lots of color, swag and jabot curtains, toile and floral fabrics, shirred bedskirts, etc. But it is all high quality and I loved it back when I bought it and I still love it now.

The biggest issue, however, is if you like something that has been determined to be "out" it is more difficult to find in the marketplace. So then you go to ebay, estate sales and thrift stores and get a great deal on what everyone is throwing out!

Totally agree Diana!
With the plus that if it is old, it is many times higher quality!

Looks like you've posted another discussion on the same house, here's what I just posted on your other post:

With the colour of your siding, I suggest black trim. Also suggest that you cover the painted columns with wood and stain the same colour stain as elsewhere on the house, with the exception of the 2 areas where you have handrails & columns which I show in black. Improving the landscaping with something that works in your area would also be a plus...

Pretty house! Maybe green with brown trim? There are some nice examples here: https://aprylann.com/green-house-with-brown-trim/?amp

With white fixtures and black faucets, etc. there are so many possibilities. My powder room is similar. I painted it a medium blue and got a pair of colorful prints for the wall you're asking about. The one you have over the toilet now is hung too high or too small. Something taller would look better. Wallpaper is used a lot in powder rooms, but DH had to remove a lot of wallpaper in our previous house, so he wasn't up for installing more here. As you can see from the other comments, green also would work. What colors have you used in the other rooms near this room? I have blue elsewhere which is what led me to blue in the PR. But I don't have a ton of blue so it's not too much.

Megan - what is the floor color? Is it tile or wood or vinyl? Hard to see that.

Any color you love can be used in a powder room. One color on all four walls usually makes a small room feel cozy.

I am so glad you have a direction now. It took a minute - sometimes you have to talk yourself in a circle and sometimes a few loops. You are dealing with a lot of distraction as well. Your kitchen will get done - you obviously have some skills and the energy to tackle it.

Take care of hubby and the dog first , then come back around to it.

Good luck!

Thanks :). The pantry holds total of 48 spices! Very convenient.

I ordered the labels from Amazon. They had a bunch of different choices for background colors or clear plastic, the color of the writing, and even the font. The different packages contain labels for different spices. I chose the pkg that had labels for the spices that I use. I ordered 2 pkgs so I could have labels on the front and the sides. When I tried this a few years back, I thought the clear labels with black writing would look cool. The clear plastic background was a bad choice though because the light reflects off of them and it is difficult to see the writing. The second time around I chose the black background with the white writing. It is much easier to see the labels now.
