Is that fixture metal? If so, it's pretty cool. At first glance, I definitely thought it was too large scale for the area. But playing with scale can really jazz up a place, and that seems to be the direction you're heading. I could see a large glass-top round table, using your existing chairs plus some new. I doubt that there would be room for a server too.

I agree with DC Interiors. A large piece of art on that wall would help a ton. No cabinet. Modern and much higher window treatment and also lower the fixture some, It should be 30" off the table. One you get a large table it should work fine, Its a nice piece.

Much better size - and I like the fixture better, also.

While I like the idea of a bright front door (probably hydrangea blue), I think the shutters only accentuate the windows' asymmetric layout.

Don't know your budget, but just saw this in Overstock:

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hand-tufted-Transitional-Oriental-Pattern-Red-Orange-Rug-10-Round/8183065/product.html

I think round could work in your space, to give it some more interest.

Or http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Handmade-Treasures-Light-Blue-Ivory-Wool-Rug-83-x-11/5767659/product.html?refccid=PQHEORGYSTEIIWSADCWYI6WZSQ&searchidx=62

I like this one better, as the orange is truly just an accent.

Hi Redpoint, my pensioner grandmothers 100 year old house was renovated in the 1930's or thereabouts by an extremely wealthy spinster who had 8 servants to look after the house and gardens (long story as to how a pensioner ended up the owner of such a huge mansion). The kitchen had a solid fuel AGA stove built into its own niche lined with white subway tiles, and under the window was a wooden countertop with a single shelf beneath and an undermount farmhouse sink. There was a single 20cm deep built in cupboard for condiments, etc. In a separate room with a tiled floor there was a huge double-door fridgidaire fridge that still worked 50 years later. All other furniture was free-standing, so between the kitchen and butler's pantry, my grandmother had various bits and pieces, some antique, some more modern, including an english oak table for 6, an oak dresser made by her cabinet maker husband in the 1930s that had been their kitchen cabinet their entire life together, a marble topped table for pastry making, another pantry cupboard, and other fridges, stoves and bits and pieces. All of it looked used, not brand new. It was a wonderful kitchen and house. I intend to do similar - I'm going to have an Everhot stove www.everhot.co.uk, have a sink cabinet built in, and then use either antique or second-hand store finds, or have some free-standing cabinets built by a cabinet maker. Expensive - not necessarily, as I can use cheap cupboards initially, and spread my purchases over time as I find the right piece.

Has anyone ever tried turning the arched cabinet doors upside down and re-installing? I would think that might look interesting with new hardware.

Chloe's glass inserts look great -- don't know if your hubby would consent to that. I don't know his reasoning for not wanting to change the cabinets, but perhaps it's 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', in which case I understand. If the cabinets drove me crazy, I'd try for the paint or staining, but I'm sure I could live with them, especially after all the other changes.

I agree with Travis who steered you away from glass mosaic tile. It's lovely but predictably out of fashion in the near future. Agree with floor cloth or area rug to hide and protect new wood flooring. A beautiful patterned roman shade will draw attention, as will interesting island stools and new lighting. Will your range be a downdraft? If not, you could add a lot of interest with an island range hood.

Something along these lines perhaps for the range hood and island. Is making the island all one height possible? That would also refresh the look.

I would love to see the pictures! Not sure if I'm understanding your question. I use an ipad, and I click on "attach a photo", then on "from library". My camera roll pops up in the list, and I just have to select which I want.

If I am judging the room size correctly, it is quite large, since a 3-seat sofa covers only the middle window. So I would choose a very long sofa, facing the tv, with two chairs with ottomans and a table in front of the window. Then a nice large coffee table, or a grouping of smaller tables as coffee table.

Much like an image that you found:

Not another dark brown leather sofa, They are over done and old hat and I am sick of looking at them and trying to think of something original to do with them that people who buy them would do. Take the stuff off the top of TV cab. except maybe three compatible pieces of art. If you have to have a leather sofa, get a worn looking one or one in a light color- be original, but not obnoxious with bright colored leather. Remove wall sconces paired, but hanging at odd angles.

Can you put the entertainment center on the opposite wall from the Fire? If so use one sofa and the rest swivel chairs, so you can see which ever you want.
