Well, it seems that you want to do SOMETHING, lol! I think it's a perfectly charming house, I even like the scallops! You could change them to plain shakes, but honestly, for me, I would save my $ and create a fabulous landscape to enhance everything. But you're obviously not satisfied with the look of the house, so you should do whatever you think would make it better for you. Here is a house with plain shakes instead of scallops. I like how they repeated the look on the base of the posts...though that probably wouldn't work on your home,
But what really makes this place is the landscaping.
I like the scallops too. I dont think, the house needs much of anything done, except the post needs to be beefier, and the landscape needs a lot of attention, which will be a huge improvement. No stone on that house. Stop trying to make the house something it isnt. Its a nice example of what it is, just needs some small type flowering trees in the front yard, and some pots of colorful flowers, and some redone larger curved flower beds. Olychick, posted a lot of pictures, that would be a big improvement to the front of your house. The existing house, looks good, and the color is good too.
You are such an adventuress for projects! if you try to save the outer rim of the brim to reattach, won’t that circumference be larger than the base of the hat? what if you trim the brim and then bind with ribbon or something you find at a craft or upholstery store—- hot glue this on?
You got me reading up on this. some brims are wired or stiffen on the outside edge but i have read 1 tutorial suggesting to trim with scissors and then add bias fold tape. You and your glue stick? do you have a measuring device— i guess a scrap of cardboard or even paper could template one standard cut by shifting it around. good luck and happy wearing, let us know the rest of the story!
One of my DDs bought a hat like that when we were traveling the Greek islands. It was quite an issue boarding little planes with that hat when we were island hopping! Doesn't quite fit in the overhead either.
It's such a diva hat, but you made it your own. You look great! And OTT is the way to live. : )
@mtnnrdredux
You are correct. The before is not exactly the hat to stuff into a carry on when boarding a plane.
AND at least for me, ott is the way to live. It is the only way I know. Love that.
You can get a glazier to install obscure glass inserts on those panes. Not going to be inexpensive, but you get to choose the glass pattern.
The window in this photo is a standard Andersen, and we had a glazier make up the insert. This one is a leaded glass with different types of obscure glass. You wouldn't necessarily want to do something this intricate, but you would be limited only by your budget and imagination.
@Patricia Colwell Consulting—Our house sits on a street that leads to the park, and there's a constant flow of people passing by. The archway provides a direct view into the second-level den, where kids often spend time. Before jumping to conclusions, it's helpful to ask questions for clarity.
I have come to love coriander for the citrus notes. I began using it in a recipe for spiced roasted cauliflower that also includes fennel, cumin, and turmeric and now I add it frequently to other things. I do enjoy grinding spices with a mortar and pestle.
“(Send me all your cilantro, I love it!)”
Ditto!!!
I haven’t used coriander in a very long time. Not sure…my memory’s telling me it’s more commonly paired with warmer spices, such as ginger, cinnamon, cumin.
Update: I revisited my not-yet-washed grinder and definitely smell it now. Quite strongly, in fact. I’d agree with Carol about the citrusy notes. I imagine one two things happened during my time away: Either the spice needed time to ”open up” or my nose-palate refreshed. I use it mainly for one thing, and it’s inevitably the last thing I add after chopping onion and garlic, freshly grinding peppers and nutmeg, adding ground ginger and clove… maybe my nose is just overwhelmed at that point!
Now, I can’t say if I’d miss the teaspoon or so if missing from a big pot of slop, but maybe next time I’ll add a bunch more to force it to stand out.
Thanks, all, for your input!
Would you consider a couch with a white washable slipcover? That would be pretty with the floral, drapes, and walls.
A sofa/loveseat in a butter yellow would look good with all the other colors you have
The love seats will fit best for sure. They seat the same number as a sofa as long as there's two cushions. No one sits in the middle spot of a sofa... I think the sofa should be the same tone as the background of your chairs vs the gray leaves in the pattern.
I know you said you don’t want the black patent but the one pair of FSNY flats I had were my favorite in terms of comfort.
I have now purchased and returned 10 pair of cap-toe ballet flats, including the Blondo waterproof. They did not meet my requirements, but I can’t resist a cute waterproof shoe.
I am slowly coming to the conclusion that my feet simply do not fit into this style of ballet flat.
Well, of all the outcomes, I did not see that one coming. IMO, while the others were all attractive, none of them can quite touch the original.
Love the room, the wndows, and that paint color is pretty too.
Your room is very pretty the way it is. My only suggestion would be to turn the two paintings above the bed to horizontal. I'm curtains were hung High and Im assuming that's why you're pictures were high as well. They look to be abstract so maybe it would work. Maybe it wouldn't.
Just me, but I do think with all the rectilinear lines in the room, something round and textured would look nice over the bed. And the plant on the floor in a round basket or round pot.
Should the person doing the work not be expected to notice and attempt to improve the situation? Would an extra coat of stain on the light sections help? All wood furniture is made from individual trees but most cabinetry does not show this much variation.
I think your cabinets are beautiful, but the result is probably due to the original color/variety of the wood.
I'd go to a cabinet maker and ask if he can provide new doors finished to match the rest of the cabinetry. Maybe not, but might be worth a try.
Agree that a skilled finisher should be able to modify colors/tones to a certain extent .... while still leaving plenty of variation as you would expect with natural wood. Other instances where this might be done incl. tweaking color of new floor boards to blend into old 100 yr old wood floor.
Really lovely. love the solar shade on the kitchen skylight, the glass and views, the sense of simplicity and calm.
What a gorgeous house and setting. Love everything about it — the materials, the organic feel, the design, all of it. It’s so serene.
I could move in today and wouldn’t change a thing.
If y’all need me, I’ll be reading on my chaise, overlooking the pool.
Or in my tub, overlooking the gardens.
Thank you for sharing, Fun!
Love the pool, the big windows, the pool and of course the view.
But I really don't like anything else. Not an MCM fan. It always feels too cold/sterile to me.
Can we talk about the sliding doors opening a room to the outside? I love the concept and I love the look, but I don't know how it works in real life. Here my house would be filled with bugs, squirrels and probably birds.
Until you pointed it out, I thought it looks fine because the distance of the runner from the right wall is uniform. Don’t sweat it. It looks great. You won’t notice it after you get used to it. And, no one will notice it until you point it out. So…don’t! 😉
This is the correct way. The foreground is centered.
Kitschykitch & Kswl,
thank you for thinking of me . things are getting a bit better every day. there are times i can go a few days and manage quite well and then for no reason I go to pieces.
but that said i do see more light at the end of the tunnel.
i realize now that i still have a daughter and grand daughter that need me so I am working hard on trying to stay strong for them and i guess myself.
i am lucky to have them and am trying to be positive and count my blessings.
i know my DH would have wanted that.
Curious that someone desires and enjoys opulence on this scale. The pool furniture is arranged for groups of strangers, not for a home.
Lars, you are correct that the flood risk is high. I noticed that along with the incredibly low property taxes (compared to ours).
Owner's quote: "“We didn’t want something that was going to fall out of favor..."
No fear of that! It's already out of favor! I agree with most of what's been said, that it is way too ornate, too much like a palace or museum or public space than a home that feels cozy. The marble bath tub got me as it'd never get warm enough to be usable. But I suspect this house had nothing to do with being practical or useful. Not surprised that they want to sell it. What makes me think they're moving into a 2500 sq ft colonial???
My favorite bowls for soup or to offer nuts & snacks. unfortunately 3 from the original set of 4 now are glued back together and suitable for only select use, Sadly, the potter is no longer local. Love the hemisphere shape, color, matte glaze.
Mairecaite, I have that bowl, too! It’s perfect for the two of us, for cooking something small or for leftovers. The lid broke, too, which is to bad because it was also handy.
We have the ”colored” bowls, and the blue (we also have a yellow in the same small size) perfect for egg salad and tuna salad. The big yellow is the right size for microwave popcorn!
I have a white shallow bowl made of thick plastic - pretty much cutting board material that I got at Crate and Barrel a long long time ago. It’s lightweight and perfect for collecting compost scraps, or ingredients when I am prepping mirepoix or veggies for later stages of a recipe. I really wish I could find a few more. No label on it. Rarely use plastic bowls but for some reason this thing has been handy for 15, maybe even 20 years now.
I purchased these years ago and then for awhile I heard that they were not available due to food safety issues. They have a perfumey quality. I can’t attest to whether the numb the tongue but I guess that’s where the descriptive hot and numbing that is seen on menus comes from. I was cooking from China Moon cookbook. Those recipes are not generally over the top hot.
you can find them at most asian or chinese shops ... at least in my area. i grind them up and add them to stuff. tongue numing yes ... start with 3-5 peppercorns and adjust up or down.
Very helpful! I want to try them!
good for you!
my (intentionally) bleached mahogany dining table would definitely like some loving attention I’m just not sure how to go about it.
Gorgeous. Now you'll have to figure out where to put all the stuff that was covering it!
Edited to add - Hope the refinisher doesn't have too many Insta followers thinking it was you that trashed that nice table!
Wow, that's amazing!
I wish I knew of or could find a good refinsher. I have a large burl wood coffee table with inlay that I just adore. It's my favorite piece of furniture. I would love to have it refinished to fix some small mishaps but I am afraid of it being ruined.
Pretty; yes the drapes are perfect. The neutral colors are beautifully blanced. Probably not simple to do but an excellent example of how grays and neutrals needn’t feel cold.
Beautiful rooms! Perfect blend of elegant and comfortable.
Very nice! Love the new bed & chaise.
Glad you saw and enjoyed. I love them. I recently missed seeing Ballets Trockadero and Ive kicked myself for procrastinating until itvwas too late.
Saw them many, many years ago - when Judith Jamison was dancing. It was marvelous 🙂
I saw them several times many years ago. I recall the performances as awe inspiring.
