I would go ahead and cut that brown cane, but it’s so small and high up on the plant , that leaving it is OK too. Looks to be two own root young plants. Sometimes GRF sends big bare roots, sometimes small own root like yours, I’m OK with either but I’d wish they provide details on what size/age/rootstock they’ll be sending out. I’m surprised they say not to separate the two plants, that’s the very first thing I’d do, even before reading the instructions, lol!

Thanks, @BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14). My inclination was also to separate the two plants, though their roots are quite enmeshed at this point (they fill the gallon container). To be fair, GRF did specify that I was ordering a 1-gallon own-root rose when I placed my order. And I think they mentioned they were one-year-old plants somewhere. I was just hoping it'd be more on par with the size of Heirloom's one-gallon own-roots, for example. But I'm still very happy to give this variety a try, and the plants look healthy.

Windowsill, I did get that mailing from Grace a few hours ago, and maybe there is hope. I have a source who knows what's going on, and she told me about Otto & Sons and other interesting stuff several days ago, but still, I'm up here in Nowhereville, and had about lost hope. I ordered a grafted two gallon Ashley, I think, so that's what I want to receive. My source thinks I will. Diane

Spinosad didn't work for me. I tried it years ago. Now I just ignore the thrips which get on just a few of my roses, and they are soon gone on their own. The thrips have lessened without any intervention. Roses affected are four Evelyn, The Prince, and Augusta Luise to a lesser degree. Diane

I’ve always been curious about Augusta L because I love all orange roses but I’ve never seen it in person. Louise C is one of the first roses I picked out when we moved; everything was shutdown during early COVID so online was how I picked out the earliest roses. And she took 3 years but she’s now a rock star and now in her 4th year definitely ny best bloomer, even more than Julia Child, the runner up.

I tried Sunsprite as a cheap Home Depot experiment. It came in poor condition and I thought I could rescue it but it never took off. I should try it again.

Louise C showing off.

Here she is June 16, 2021 so just a one year old plant.

Here she is as a newly planted band in June 2020.

Your plant of it is looking fantastic, mmm. I have Eyes For You and wonder how this one is different from it. Seems like your Easy On The Eyes might be more floriferous.

Forgot to show the color variation. This is June 20, 2023, before the flowers get more white. They open more pink/purple and then whiten as the sun hits them.

July 1, 2023 from another angle shows the relative sizes of my roses.

Easy on the Eyes is the center bottom row. Iceberg is to the right of it. To the left the bigger one is Sally Holmes. There is actually a Calico Gal in front of it but they sort of blend together in the picture. Livin Easy is the orange behind it. To the right of that the not very dense one is Dainty Bess.

Judi,

I’m afraid your experience with K&M isn’t too out of the ordinary, there are times when one must try many times to place an order, and other times one suceeds right away. Patience and persistence may both be necessary. They are very trustworthy people and always send out very nice plants once that order is placed. I have probably ordered from them a dozen times over the years, so I obviously feel it’s worth the effort, but I understand that others may not want to go through the hassle.

Oh Susan, I’d say K&M and RU jointly win the gold medal when it comes to Low Tech Roses! RU’s website, where you have to keep hitting ’older posts’ to see additional offerings should probably win some ’ least intuitive user interface’ award, too. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to explain to folks how to view all their offereings. (And this is their reveamped and ’improved’ website!) But they are my two favorite vendors for hard-to-get roses!

Desiree is the leader of the pack this spring! I planted her in one of my metal raised beds.

She was pruned back hard as I do all my roses so even tho she looks small she’s about 5 years old now ! She is one of my favorites of all . Her colors warm my heart on this chilly spring day . I can’t recommend her enough!!

Mystic beauty . This gal is about 4 or 5 as well and own root from roses unlimited. For some reason she is a slow growing one for me personally, so I don’t prune her back at all . I love her beautiful blooms especially against the lavender next to it .

thats all for today :)

Maybe everyone should start a thread with just their garden-then we could keep track of who has what and what does well in certain areas

They are so easy Kristine. I love Ellen. Her blooms are fantastic. Every photo of Jeri was very pretty too, although I don't have it.

My Ellen ran into a little gopher trouble but I have one in a basket now and I'm sure she'll be fine. The gallicas can sucker, which I am thrilled with.

Paul may chime in here, but in previous discussions of his gallicas they don't sucker nearly as much as others in that class. I recall a few he mentioned as rare if at all suckers (Marianne comes to mind) so I think Ellen is in the same class. I haven't grown Ellen yet but mine is on order too so we'll discover how long it blooms together. As with any rose, rebloom will get better as it matures.

For Jeri Jennings you would be in a good zone for her. There are tea elements in breeding of many of his roses so they are marginally hardy for me here in zone 5. Now that I'm zone 6 I may try again with some (I have ordered Mel's Heritage as my top choice of please please survive). If Renae and its cultivars do well for you, Jeri Jennings should be good. I think she appreciates some shade if you get blazing hot sun.

Kristine, did you buy Jeri Jennings? If so, I can say that mine just does its thing with no trouble whatsoever. Planted it and have left it. Blooms a ton and looks great all the time.

Your Boscobel looks wonderful, but good to know that bloom are different once heat sets in

Pink rose,

Are your Austins on Fortuniana? Some Austin varieties grow vegetatively on that rootstock. When I first got Benjamin Britten and Gertrude Jekyll on Fort they were huge sprawly and mostly bloomless, giant thorny weeds. Later I read Dr Malcom Manners say the same thing about Austins on Fort. Some others have been terrifc for me, such as Evelyn and Abe.
