HI -- Shop around for a good architect . The main concern would be if the ceiling structure will support a floor and living space and so on.

I'm in this boat as well. We have open cathedral type ceilings - about 25 feet from floor to peak. Is this enough to put in a loft?

I am in the exact predicament as lefty47 - I've been contemplating turning attic into loft space (steep-pitched roof), along with skylights and solar panels; my house also faces south. My concern is whether or not the stairs I put in have to be a certain size/style to be "up to code". I don't have enough space for a standard staircase.
