Ryan, that combo is gorgeous! Is it Ebb Tide and Agusta Louise? (I can never remember the spelling on AL). Here's a shot of a section of the sidewalk part of my front corral from last year... I don't have as many in bloom yet this year. You can see Apricot Nectar already reaching out to grab passersby :-D

Ryan, boy, did I ever get that one wrong! The blooms look a lot like the pics I've seen of AL, and I had forgotten that Louise Clements gets kinda peachy at times. I grew LC quite a long time ago, and sometimes think about getting it again... yours is gorgeous. I'm totally with you on your orange-purple-lavender combos, although my "must do" combos are a yellow-orange-purple... any shade of those together. Yes, it's Sunsprite in the foreground :-D

Gorgeous pictures of Louise and friends! I've never found Louise as anything but own root and she's a little reluctant to survive our winters own root, or at least she was before we moved to zone 6a. Your pictures make me want to try her again. Is Heirloom still selling Clements roses?

Speaking of own root mmmm, I haven't found White Licorice to be all that hardy on own roots and I tried several times. I also haven't tried Chantilly Cream but since she's available grafted that would be more likely to survive my zone 5 winters. FWIW...

My Marianne in its second year.

I was going to transplant it in the ground out of its pot this year but I ran out of energy when it was nice and the weather has not been cooperating on my days off, so it's still in its pot.

It will get a new home after it's done blooming.

I may be too quicke to judge Bring Me Sunshine, but so far stems have been long and sprawly with no buds in sight. Hoang Ton reported similar, his has buds at the end, but some canes drape to the ground (he is ahead of me by a few weeks). DA also put out a note saying the variety didn’t meet their standards in the US, it was rather cryptic whether the variety was substandard, or their crop of it, seemed to be both. Maybe it will mature into a beauty, some Austins take their time, I sure hope so. If not, we might all be on a Quest for Zest.

Lilyfinch / Rosecanadian / Echo -- I really appreciate the kind comments. I've been hesitant to post much on these forums until recently because I grow my roses in an unconventional setting: in large pots, indoors, on a sunny urban windowsill. I know it's most definitely not the right way to grow roses, and the results don't come anywhere close to roses grown outdoors, but the blooms I manage to get still bring me joy. I've mostly focused on floribundas but couldn't resist Loves Me, Loves Me Not. Can't wait to hear more about how yours does, Lilyfinch!

Windowsill - when we love roses, we grow roses. You found a way. :) :) I adjust my expectations growing roses in zone 3b/4a...I don't expect to have huge glorious roses. That's okay. They make me happy. Let's do an up high on that!! :) :)

I saw a lone bloom on Moonlight yesterday and one on Zepherine Drouhin. Usually it's Old Blush that's the earliest. Some of my new seedlings are blooming and it's great fun to see what their first blooms look like. I got a nice purple from Midnight Blue that has bloomed several times already and is a good sized, branchy plant. Got a white streaked fuchsia with small blooms from Granny Grimmets and a magenta from Granny G. Got a white from Sharifa Asma on a small plant. Looks like some blooms with tabasco or pomegranite color in the buds from another. A Well Being seedling is about to bloom...can't wait to see that as the parent is such a good plant.

Augusta Luise sold for $63.01

Chandos Beauty $60.00

Princess Chichibu was the most expensive at $301

I am surprised no one made a bid for Golden Zest! Just bloomed in my garden and is gorgeous.

Because of the input I’ve received, I do not intend to delete this thread. Sorry, Kitty. Although at present I do not believe Garden Roses LLC is a safe company to deal with and I cannot recommend them to anyone, neither do I feel duty bound to campaign against them.

If I may, I would like to recommend a little story that helps me keep my equilibrium in cases like this. You can find the story in print, I believe, or you can find it easily online: “The Woodcutters Wisdom”, by Max Lucado.

@KittyNYz6 that's great, but your mistake here is to assume that others are somehow less skilled or more anonymous. I don't see any facts at all in your comments; they are mere opinions and hold no more weight than any other comments.

Oh Susan, I’d say K&M and RU jointly win the gold medal when it comes to Low Tech Roses! RU’s website, where you have to keep hitting ’older posts’ to see additional offerings should probably win some ’ least intuitive user interface’ award, too. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to explain to folks how to view all their offereings. (And this is their reveamped and ’improved’ website!) But they are my two favorite vendors for hard-to-get roses!

Kristine, I must have missed the post where you explained what happened, but I gather from the other comments that you have surgery coming up....hope it goes well and whatever the problem was will go away for good!

Diane, I hope you feel better soon! I can't imagine pruning while feeling sick, you are very brave!

A few pics from this morning: Julia Child getting started, newcomer Lagoon's first bloom surrounded by a promising ring of buds, Nigel Hawthorne's first bloom of the year and my indian hawthorn in full bloom.

Here is a part directly from the court documents, for those who are interested;

26. For example, on information and belief, the roses sold by JessiesRoseUSA under the CAPABILITY® mark are of the variety ‘Ausapply’, protected by U.S. Patent No. PP29958; the roses sold by JessiesRoseUSA under the KEIRA® mark are of the variety 'Ausboxer’, protected by U.S. Patent No. PP22947; and the roses sold by JessiesRoseUSA under the CONSTANCE® mark are of the variety ‘Austruss’, protected by U.S. Patent No. PP26676, as shown in the screenshots attached as Exhibits V-Z. 27. These varieties are from David Austin’s wedding collection, which are not commercially available as a plant, and therefore, could not have been obtained from any authorized source. 28. On information and belief, Defendants had actual or constructive knowledge of the David Austin Patents and the infringement of these patent rights was willful. 29. The product descriptions on Defendants’ Etsy shop and website contain text and images copied directly from David Austin’s own catalog and website.

That is just one of many trademark infringements DA is claiming in the case.

Actually, Elf Rosa, they asked for this:

That the Court issue an Order directing Defendants to file with the Court and serve on Plaintiff a full and complete accounting of all monies received by Defendants as a result of the sale of products protected by the David Austin Patents and/or the David Austin Trademarks. g) That in accordance with 15 U.S.C. §§ 1114 and 1117, Plaintiff be awarded monetary damages sufficient to recover Defendants’ improper profits, and all damages suffered by Plaintiff, including a trebling of damages and an award of attorneys’ fees and costs due to the exceptional nature of this case. h) For such other and further relief as the Court may deem just and proper.

I was told that once a rose has been in commerce for a year, it is no longer possible to get a US patent for that variety. Moreover, a specific US patent is required for a rose to be protected in the US, no other sort of patent will suffice. The example provided to me was Veteran’s Honor , one of J&P’s most successful roses. Ludwigs had sold it for a year before J&P tried and failed to get a patent for the variety. (If you look up the Veterans Honor on HMF, you will see ’patent application withdrawn’, highly unusual for a best-selling rose from a big company). This was told to me by a very well known and respected rose professional.

How about if all of you who are so disturbed by the (very few) threads addressing current issues with rose vendors just stop reading those particular threads? There are literally dozens of current separate threads here dealing with blooms and spring and varieties and all of the other normal rosey things we love to discuss that don't mention anything controversial. I don't understand why so many of you seem so personally upset by them and keep suggesting that they be deleted, or people stop posting to them. If you choose to be an ostrich, that's your choice, but maybe don't try to stop others from discussing current events in the rose world.

Amiga Mia is my wafting rose and I adore her for it! I too would like to find another like her. She is taller than most of my other roses but was a more mature plant when she went in so not sure how long it takes to get to this height. She is also my profile picture.

July 10th, 2023 pic.

Not sure if she is so good at wafting because the flowers are at my nose height. Also July 10th, 2023.

Oct. 10th, 2023 pic. You can see how many flowers she has in relation to my others.

Same day, Oct. 10th, 2023.

@rosecanadian - ?? wow?

Additional comments: I just read one of the articles that you linked on How Little we know About Fragrance. They describe the main rose fragrances as ”rose, nasturtium, orris, violets, apple, clove and lemon.” That’s a good start, but odd to say ”rose” which is kinda like saying that blue is, well, blue. Some other fragrances to learn to identify are, as Straw mentions, things like litchi, guava, mango. Realize that different people smell things differently. I say that Jude the Obscure smells like guava, and Bolero smells like waterlilies and marshmallow cream, but you might detect other fragrances. Or Glamis Castle smells like well-used gym socks that have been sitting in a locker for days in my garden but in Oregon it smells warm and, for lack if better words, ”rosey”. When I say something smells ”like”, it might mean that it smells just like that, or it might mean that it is “evocative of” (like Evelyn sometimes smells just like sun ripened peaches at times, and Scentuous reminds me of Maker’s Mark bourbon but I wouldnt say it smells exactly like that). The nerves that detect scent are so intertwined with emotion that it is hard to tell them apart, especially without training.

The article on ”How to Smell Roses” is pretty good. I particularly liked how they describe ”myrrh”, which I’ve always felt was a made-up David Austin term that encompassed something he couldn't accurately describe, but I agree that it is often ”anise”.

Sultry, my Pink Jasmine and Rose du Mai dianthus have been blooming for about a month on either side of the driveway. Each is spectacular in its own right, but together, the combo is beyond divine. And fortunately, the fragrance drifts into the house when we have the front door open. I've heard some folks say that some Jasmines smell like cat pee, but my Pink Jasmine doesn't at all. But it could also be an individual thing, like how some folks only taste soap when they eat cilantro :-D

Sultry this will be my first season with Madame Anisette. She has not bloomed for me yet, but she has buds! I can't wait to see how she performs. Did yours have a strong fragrance her first year?

Ryan this is my first season with Lady Emma Hamilton. She is putting on her first flush now. To me the fragrance is similar to Gruss an Coburg and English Garden. We have a large gardenia bush near our back door. I didn't prune it last year, so this seasons first flush should be amazing! The fragrance is locked in my memory from my childhood. I love that it wafts. I had a potted one near my front door but had to move it because the fragrance was too strong if you can believe that! Just where I couldn't breath. It was too much. So I moved it halfway across the yard haha.

I absolutely adore mine! The color and form are fantastic. The only thing to mention is the bloom size, J&P says 3 inches and mine are much smaller. I’m assuming the plant maturing will help that (?)

Pride of Madeira is actually something I’m somewhat familiar with, only because I helped with some cleanup of some coastal areas here where Pride of Madeira is considered invasive and hostile due to how fast and large it grows, crowding out native species on the coast. We were instructed to seek and destroy several plants like that. Funny that’s its cropping up randomly in people’s yards—it definitely fits the bill for invasive then!

I'm not sure. His dam is half Lamancha & half Nigerian Dwarf (mini lamancha). Usually their babies will have small elf or gopher ears. Every once in a while they have one with Nigerian ears. The other Mini Lamancha does dont usually care one way or another. He was the first baby born. He was alraedy out when I got out to the barn and she was butting him. We tried different methods of getting them to bond. She wanted nothing to do with him lol. Then she had another one with tiny ears like her. She loves that one.

That is the first baby we've had that was rejected. His ears straightened out and look normal now. He is doing great and is weaned now.

I had pulled the other 2 bucklings from their mom because the mom had 4. I left the 2 doelings on her.

I have been trying to propagate my Paradise Found for several years now, and it never roots. It also doesn't seem to want to grow from graft, but this year it looks like mine just might take!

I decided earlier this year just to buy one and it doesn't seem to be sold anywhere, so I hope my grafted one grows

Ben, nothing particularly special. I was glad to find White Lightnin', an old favorite. My remaining one is very elderly. Regan used to carry it, but no longer, and it's tough to find. The other one was Sunsprite, which was kind of a ridiculous purchase, since I already have three of them. But I've found that one is now harder to find, so I bit :-D
