I love the SW Jasper dark green music room. I assume the same color was used in what I think might be a home office, even on the ceilings and door. I have seen lots of pictures showing how amazing dark green is in rooms not blessed with natural light; it's nice to see that dark green also looks good in rooms that do have natural light. And it's reassuring to see how good it looks with frosty pastel furniture in the well-lit spaces. I've seen other pictures of dark green rooms with no light, and in those, bright accents like chartreuse or neon blue bring the look together.
I love the transformation of the space next to the kitchen from boring layered horizontal lines that made the space look unfinished to bold dramatic vertical lines. Simple things like creating that strong vertical fireplace, whiting out the adjacent choppy areas, and aligning the table with the fireplace doubled the apparent size of the room and made the space so much more calming. I love it when basic principles of art are utilized in interior design.

I have been playing with the the site that @ker9 posted for about 30 minutes now. I think I can easily become consumed with it. I love how it shows the analogous colors that correspond to the color entered. This is very helpful!

One of the things seen is some of these kitchen is the lack of individual cabinet doors showing full length doors instead. This is a concept that has always intrigued me. Especially some of the new ones like Revego pocket doors by Blum. Why have (and pay for) multiple boxes and cabinet doors when you could just have shelving behind a door, especially when the whole wall is going to be cabinets anyway? It hides any mess and the appliances. Needless to say it would have to be aesthetically pleasing and maybe 2 or 3 doors would make sense to access different area.

Beautiful, exceptional and inspiring kitchens. I can only dream. It will be interesting to see how some of these trends translate to the more affordable high street brands. I have had a serious crush on a lot of these brands and designers for years. Beyond exquisite. Thank you for the stunning article with exceptional accompanying photographs.

Yes a linen in a neutral or or you could do a medium gray to give a bit of contrast. I just did my bedroom with the online drapes from Twopages they are beautiful. I have light walls in the sitting room and did the dark charcoal….you could do more of a medium gray too.

In our upstairs renovation, we are changing from one hallway return serving four bedrooms, to three returns, one per bedroom (exchanging one bedroom for three ensuites). We are moving the thermostat upstairs to reflect the needs of the bedrooms, not the dining room. Hopefully those negate the needs for bedroom fans, and with the thermostat in the hallway at the top of the stairs, the bedrooms could be quite cool, especially with the doors shut. Great in summer, but what about winter? My hope for radiant heating under stone floors was nixed by the contractor due to the weight of the stone, so now I plan for cork floors without heating. I'm just concerned about the bedroom temperatures in winter. Am I concerned for nothing? We like bedrooms cooler and there's heating blankets. One bedroom will be an office/guest room. One will be a workout room/ guest room. Maybe it's not a problem... ?

@ilikefriday your ceiling tiles on the hallway ceiling to disguise the attic door up there is still a great idea and I hope to use it.

I also have been thinking all along about how best to utilize the horizontal light coming in from the west window. Using a beveled-glass transom is one aspect. Another idea is to hang one or three prisms in the window.

I'm thinking that if the walls are textured that also would take advantage of the strongly directional light. We've looked at wood paneling on the walls, and now I am thinking about paintable textured wallpaper with a nature-inspired pattern. What do you think of this one with branching, painted a dark green like Sherwin Williams Jasper?

Most realtors try to get buyers to see pass easily changed items in a house. Fans are just too personal an item to change if they are in good repair and in working order. I can see getting rid of too much furniture and personal items. Our last house we sold this year, the new owners first change was to remove the beautiful cut glass chandelier over the dining table and put in a ceiling fan. It was an open concept great room, dining room, and kitchen combo. There was another matching cut glass globe chandelier in the kitchen. And a fan already in the great room. Guess it goes to show, that everyone has a different view of what looks good. And I certainly won't miss taking down nine cut glass globes and hand washing off the grease and dust from cooking. My new house will not have a chandelier either. Way too much work for me but I must confess they do look beautiful.

I think ceiling fans are a functional must when one has high ceilings or homes that don't have AC. I never want fans to be a design focal point, so I stay away from ones that are too stylized. Instead, I try to find ones that will function well, but blend into the ceiling as much as possible.

I also believe ceiling fans are integral for improving air movement and they also cut down on air conditioning and heating costs (remember to put them in reverse during winter to help recirculate the warm air throughout the room). I have actually used a paint sprayer to paint ceiling fans and the blades the same color as the ceiling so that it minimizes it's appearance in a room. I believe it works well for contemporary design and keeps the room airy, simple and clean.

Amy, I have painted wallpaper that has been stripped as much as possible and spackled at the edges, sanded and you cannot tell it from sheetrock, no one can, even my anal retentive son who declared he would not paint over wallpaper, remarking "See how much better it looks, Mother, since you stripped the wallpaper off." I still have not told him that we did not strip the wallpaper off. That was 5 years ago.

I used a paintable wallpaper that matched the texture in the rest of the house. I actually used it to cover a mirror in the dining room. My kids have yet to figure out where I put that mirror.
I've also painted over wallpaper, but if you already have drywall damage it would be easier to wallpaper over it. I bought mine at Lowes, and it went up very quick and easy.

Original post was a while ago, but people do search for info so thought I'd reply. First, pebble stone if done tastefully is never going "out of style". It's a natural element. It was here long before you and will be here long after you :-). What dates it is when people try and make stripes/bands, pictures, fake "rivers", etc. That's when it goes wrong. Look isn't for everyone but if you want a "spa/natural" vibe, it's an option. Some suggestions:

-as mentioned in other posts, sliced pebble is the best option floor. It's smooth to walk on. Say no to the rounded pebbles for shower floor!

-Regardless of how "tight" the 12x12 mesh pattern of stones is when you take out of box, removing from mesh and laying individually is the way to go. You don't want to see the 12x12 "pattern" after it's laid. Any good tile installer will do this without being asked. Ask anyway.

-Use natural grey grout on the floor. Say no to the white grout! (why do people do this?). You will be thankful. I moved into my new home a year ago, and it still looks great!

-Pre-seal the stone before it's laid. I did this myself because I sourced the Indonesian ocean pebble tile and provided to builder. Not all tilers would do this and it prevents the grout "haze" from penetrating the stone. It will get sealed again after grouting.

-A couple photos of my master. I used a color body matt Italian porcelain for the walls and bath floor. I did do the shower niche with the pebble, but otherwise said "no", to stripes/bands, etc.

How do you know when you’re finally gone overboard with the orchids? When you can no longer see your dining room? Or not until they start falling off the edge of the counter?

I love #3, Moody Mixer! I love the soapstone, the hanging glass shelving, the antique mirrored tile, the under-counter niche, and the cabinet color. I'd even like this as a kitchen.
I also like the ceiling treatment that creates an alcove feel when viewed from the outside. So understated, almost hidden when not in use. I like it when a bar isn't a main attraction but only comes to life when in use. If it's glaring at you first thing in the morning, it just seems so out of line with the mood... like walking into a living room with kids toys scattered everywhere. Just uck! There's a time and place for such things... not all the time.

By spreading out the beverage and snacks from the cooking area there is less congestion in the kitchen. And the open layout means everyone can see the game.

There’s some good advice here— esp in the latter half of the article— but I think it could be made clearer that solely letting a nonnative monoculture (most lawns) ‘go wild’ isn’t going to do much for native wildlife/ biodiversity. And annual seed mixes should be used with caution as they typically contain nonnative flowers, including ones that can be invasive (ie daisies).

And don’t neglect to check HOA requirements and deed restrictions before going wild. Some require that yards be “ kept neatly mowed,” and it requires a variance to keep from being fined by the HOA for violations.

While is a good set of basic design recommendations for a bathroom with a variety of users, it would have been very useful to also mention thede practical considérations:

"Universal Design" design features that accommodate all ages: curbless shower, thinking through who needs access to what and how to provide that is central for family use

I think I saw a pullout drawer in a vanity in onevof your photos that could also serve as a step up platform for small children? if so, that was a good idea

A pretty clock with a timer is another wise addition as us a clean up caddy for family members to use to do a quick cleanup after themselves so the bathroom is ready (more or less!) for the next user

If you have an “L” kitchen couldn’t you just continue the ladder into the cabinet? You could even have a door that hinges on the opposite side with a cutout for the rail.
