I'm very very excited about Paul Barden's 'Clara Thompson' which has just given me the first blooms! YEA! TOTALLY disease-free!
I am always surprised by some of the oddities that my roses surprise me with . . . so I guess I'm not surprised.
The first photos are so very different from typical 'Crépuscule' that I wonder -- could two different varieties have been budded to the same rootstock, so that you have branches of each?
@malcolm_manners, thanks for your thoughts. I agree they look like two entirely different roses. So different, in fact, that the old rose specialist I bought it from didn’t recognise it as crépuscule either! But I‘m pretty sure its all the same rose, which only has two canes (then and now) and buds on both are currently showing the typical apricot/sunset tones.
That is incredible! Another rose that should be more widely grown.
Most definitey! There should be more sources.
Still going strong.
Looking good. Mine never mildews but does get blackspot. It's the first to bloom here too.
If there were any brick Victorians in San Francisco they would have been gone after the 1906 earthquake.
Such a good rose! Always draws people in our garden.
Years ago, we visited the Taylors in south Alabama. They had hyridized and introduced the mini rose Fairhope among other minis. They assumed we wanted Fairhope, which I did. But walking through their greenhouse, I saw IHT and I had to have it. And did. It was so good for so long until the voles/moles found how tasty the roots were. I'm about to plant horseradish in that part of the yard in retrobution.
Mine are fading now. I will try to find time to cut out the white one's growth into the neighboring hazelnut: 'Dupontii' needs that space. In any case, the white Lady Banks can take over the flowering ash on the other side of its pergola. The yellow Lady Banks has reached the top of its flowering ash in the woods, and I'm wondering whether and where it will continue its wanderings, as there's plenty of space down there. It's not at its most visually effective silhouetted against the sky, but that's the situation. They are wonderful roses.
You're right. They're wonderful.
Jackie -- my yaller is wonderful -- and though our cruddy spring weather cost us some of the big shoiw, in our climate it blooms ALMOST all year.
In this climate, I wouldn't be without it.
Where my roses grow, I generally get great sprays of Rosa moschata in fall and I've gotten two National Dowager queens with them. They are spectacular sprays and fragrant as well.
Now for the downer: at my last local show I was answering a stranger's questions about OGRs. at the OGR table. We were talking categories and how they were different and what grows well here. One of the local Great rosarians (He Has won all the local ARS medals that exist) comes up, takes him by the elbow and said, "don't waste your time with these old things, let me show you what you need to be growing" and dragged him to the hybrid tea table."
I will always regret not calling NW out for his rudeness.
The point is to show folks not in rose societies that fragrant roses still exist, that all sorts of blooms are possible, and sometimes, to meet people who are interested in spite of the judges in their silk sports coats and immaculately manicured hands. (I do notice when self proclaimed judges have perfect fingernails.)
My first bud is just now starting to form on CT. I can hardly wait! It bloomed last year, and the color was unbelievable. But I'm hoping for blooms that are more full this year, that look more like yours, Jeri.
EDIT: That reminds me, I need to make a new tag for Clara, as she's no longer "angry", lol.
My kind of rose ! I'm surprised more people haven't commented on it's beauty. Reminds me a lot of my climbing crimson glory.
Gorgeous, Jeri!
It really is.
Gorgeous. I love the slightly cupped form and the well-shaped and well-placed petals, and the glowing center. It manages to be elegant and casual at the same time.
Just got mine from K&M, quite excited about it. Even had a bloom, has excellent fragrance too
What a wonderful rose. I miss my Grandmother's Hat. Thanks for the pictures, Jeri.
Your GH is way ahead of mine - mine is in partial shade, so not getting as big either, but it is starting to bloom. Gorgeous photos!
Jackie
I don't know. Doubt if it's in commerce. You could ask Alice.
@Country_Gardener Mississippi_Z8b you should probably contact both Rose Petals Nursery and Angel Gardens to see if they have maintained mother plants and may be able to propagate it for you as they both previously listed it for sale per Help Me Find- Roses.
