many people have wall sconces and like them , or in fact love them, both indoors and outdoors. they arent a main source of lighting in this case.
yes, floor and table lamps are options , but so are sconces when a person needs to or wants to keep floor space to a maximum or a person prefers for less objects/ pieces in a room. its really a matter of preference. i have not minded having them and they have worked for us so far.
I laugh when people post the phrase, 'go with your gut'!!! That phrase only applies to how a person feels about a choice. Your 'gut' cannot discern design or functional criteria for a selection.
Glad I could bring you a laugh. As for me, I'm trying to decorate a home I live in, not build a design portfolio or land in AD. My gut reaction to an element is more relevant than someone else's professional opinion. And honestly, some of the advice given here is just plain BAD. There, I said it. Should someone buy and install sconces they hate just because some internet stranger who claims a certain degree of unproven expertise thinks they suck?
My advice? If you truly are drawn to something, the LAST thing you should do is post it to this forum. Someone - maybe not everyone - but someone will assuredly try to rain on your parade.
Often when I visit this site, I'm reminded just why people AVOID hiring "professional designers." In the wrong hands, it becomes a bossy person who tries to dictate things you don't authentically love or want in your own home.
LRV (Light Refelective Value) has only one purpose.
It tells how much light is reflected back from the surface of a colour as a %.
The higher the % the more light is reflected.
LRV explains nothing about to which Hue Family a colour belongs.
Nor about where, in its Hue Family, a colour sits.
LRV tells us nothing about how much chroma (degree of colour), a particular paint colour possesses.
Value is a much better indicator of how light a paint colour actually *looks.*
There are different colour attributes to do certain colour descriptor jobs.
Hue Family. Value. Chroma. LRV.
LRV is only one small aspect of understanding a colour’s character.
I had read that one should aim for an LRV differential of at least 3 for a light contrast.
This is tragically tragic misinformation about LRV.
Subtracting LRV values, whether is 3 or 10, tells you nothing about how different colors look compared to each other.
And the random "3" is just silly (don't aim to sound harsh, it's just the truth)
A +/- of 3 is a reasonable, standard, expected margin of error when measuring/calculating LRV. That degree of granular accuracy and consistency just doesn't happen. Certainly not from paint brand to paint brand and, frankly, it's not reasonable to expect it within a single paint brand.
And 100% agree with @Marylee H.
Thank you tozmo1.
i think the foxture you posted is pretty, but to me it feels very formal and something i would tend to use over an eating area/ DR.
the other issue with that type of shape is that they tend to be longer in height. they really need a longer chain/ rod to hang properly and look nice. my electriican showed me pics of a fixture that was meant for a long chain/rod and the client insisted they use it despite the fact the chain had to be significantly shortened. it didnt look good, as it wasnt meant to be hung that high and with so little chain.
the fixture is going in my LR and i have standard 8 foot ceilings. my electrician recommended a fixture that is no more than 20 inches in height.
i dont think the mock ups truly represent how it will really look; its really just to give an idea of how things will somewhat look in the space. i appreciate everyone doing the mock ups as they really do help me so much!! they are great visuals!!
been searching for options and csme across this fixture at lighting store. it looked gorgeous in person. they are petsl shaped glass pieces hanging
it is semi flush , so the overall height of 21.50 is good for my space. the width/ circumference is 24. is that too small over the 30 wide coffee table? i was hoping to find a 27-30 wide fixture in a style i like, but havent come across any yet. thoughts on sizing ?
