Yes this house needed a lot of work. Fortunately interior paint and a small bathroom reno are the last things left. I think you are right that a banquette would be better than an island to not overwhelm the room. Thank you for your input.

You already have a 4” backsplash in the same material. Do you not like it?

You have the advantage of seeing this in your space and your light, so if you think white is what you want, go for it. The color variation in the Celine tile is beautiful, but it might look too busy, and you have much less space to view it in than your inspiration image. I would go for something like Fireclay Tile’s Gardenia, possibly in a beautiful shape.

Bedrosians Clara is nice. I need a warm white too for my kitchen backsplash and liked it better than the Chloe. https://www.bedrosians.com/en/product/detail/clara-tile/?itemNo=100000800&queryid=24810f79235c97329a18b37d36faa6d7. There is a white and an ivory in glossy or matte.

I can tell you how to choose which: go with the direction (usually horizontal) that allows you the longest continuous expanse of grain pattern. When you choose vertical you only need to match 8 or 9" of cabinet fronts (the height of the cabinets). When you go horizontal you need to match absolute acres. So in the bottom image, look at the lowers under the microwave and corner cabinet. You won’t see anything like that if you go with vertical grain. That said, you know better than I that the grade of wood in the lower image is beyond first.

Gosh, there is nothing more beautiful than the art master woodworkers can create.

I may not have been super clear. Your lower cabinets will only be 34.5” tall but they will be several cabinets/feet wide. Think of the longest piece of veneer you can use. In your space as in most, that would be oriented horizontally. I think ——————— looks better than |||||

If it makes you feel better to know it, you are not the only one to find this difficult! I would look for natural light grey, or something like SW Pure White (which is very slightly green/yellow). You are going to have to get some samples, paint a bit, and see how the paints compliment the cabinets in different lights.

Are you sure it is not something about your lighting or what is outside your windows that are making things look green because it is not just your cabinets. Your soffit and ceiling look green to me as well.

My experience....

My old Kitchen had painted cabinets and the paint started chipping a few years in. We had them 13 years and they looked beat-up by the time we remodeled.

Our "new" Kitchen is now 16 years old with stained cherry wood cabinets and they still look great. (I've even had people think the Kitchen is new b/c the cabinets look so good.) We're not hard or easy on cabinets -- I'd say we're "average". Yes, there are a couple of nicks here & there, but there aren't any paint chips that expand over time. Think about it...once a chip in paint occurs, the chip can get bigger as the paint around the perimeter of the original chip starts flaking/chipping away as well.

And, as mentioned above, the nicks are not as noticeable as wood/material under the paint would be (unless the paint is the same color as the wood).

I'll never have painted cabinets again!

Tile is such a personal choice. You should have what you love and if Cloé is it, fine. I honestly don’t get the appeal in a world filled with handmade, artisinal tile, of buying this particular tile, especially when it is everywhere. It is an OK, mass manufactured reproduction of handmade Moroccan field tile. There is nothing special about it, and the ”messy” look doesn’t really fit the aesthetics of your space.

Budget permitting, consider a tile with a beautiful shape, or crazing, or some color variability, but something inherently beautiful that will give you joy seeing it every day. It doesn’t have to be Fireclay Tile, but check out their web site for inspiration, and for glaze info.

I wouldn’t paint the den cabinets unless 1. they are worn and need painting, in which case this is the right time to do it, or 2. you don’t like the color anymore. I find it odd when everything is matchy matchy, but that’s me. I also think of my den (north facing, wood paneled, book cases) as a tranquil, cozy space for focused reading and work more than a bright, light filled office because I’m working with what I’ve got 😂 I’m sure whatever you decide it’ll be awesome.

Oh - I get it now. What you are calling a den is the same space, opposite end of the room. I’d still let each space keep its own identity. It’ll be fine either way.

There is no trend for this! Some people do the family room built-ins to match the kitchen colors and some people use a different color or stain.

In the house I built, I chose to do the built-ins in the same white as the kitchen. In the previous house I remodeled, I chose to do the built-ins in the same mahogany wood as the kitchen.

Do what works best for you and the overall design.

Okay thanks - this is what I was asking & you nailed it. Thank you all. Will mull it over now that I can just decide what we want vs the trend or rules.

@eam44 - Thank you. I never did post a reveal thread, but if anyone wants the info, I have it in my head. How is your space coming along?

Rest of the home has no muntins. It’s a 80s post and beam timber frame

Last night I went and bought the under sink Hydroviv filter, as I had been on their mailing list for several days and they sent more discounts over the days. So I went with that system. I bought one for under the kitchen sink. I can always install something else later if I want to go with an RO system. I didn't break the bank. I had considered buying one for the bathroom near our bedrooms, but there isn't much room under the sink so I skipped that. I

I'm glad I added our water test table above for you all to see.

Our main line system from the water plant, to our house is only about 20 years old. We live in a rural area. Our house plumbing has always been copper and newly plumbed again with copper 10 years ago.

DH is disapointed the system I bought doesn't take out floride. He's more of a hard liner than me and I get what Jake says above:

  • "Don't go don't the rabbit hole of "absolutely pure water" - because NOTHING else that you are going to eat, drink, inhale or touch is chemical free. Simply getting into a car is far more hazardous than your unfiltered municipal water - let alone driving your car anywhere."

I appreciate everyones input. Thats what I have always loved about GW/Houzz; such a supportive community.

I was recently wondering the same thing, I checked her user profile and her last comment was in February of 2023...I hope she's OK. I sent her a message today to see if she's still around Houzz.

The home is not yet built. I’m sure you want to get your ducks in a row, but it is way to early to commit to a tile. You should look at candidate sample tiles in your space in your light before you choose one. If you are looking for advice on samples to consider, there are so many that would look beautiful in your space. Do you have inspiration images from kitchens you admire?

You could use the natural wood on that wall, with a black island.
