I didn’t like what the previous owners. They planned so many different types of plants, it wasn’t cohesive at all to me. Plus it was so overgrown and weeds everywhere, I was embarrassed and I just wanted a blank slate. Maybe some don’t agree but i have no regrets. I don’t understand how boxwoods won’t work when I see so many houses with them around me? I don’t need these extravagant flower beds, I just want simple and nice. I don’t have time to have the 12 feet garden beds that were there before.

@nicole -- aren't folk funny? And aggravating; my brother sold our childhood home (200-year old well-proportioned house) to a builder who razed the dear old place and built a horrid thing which is a jumble of overdone elements of bad design IMHO. I cannot bear to ever go see it again. It's difficult to come to terms about this, for me. le sigh. Why do folk buy something and change it so drastically?

At least you have a better attitude towards the changes they made to your former place! And I'm happy that you got the light fixture back!!!

lily316 -- LOL! I'd likely have to self-publish! But thanks for your kind words.

Ha! A light bulb moment here: some years ago, my DH had some family and Christmas photos made into a couple of softcover bound "book" by Snapfish which are very nice. Maybe I will figure out how to put all these photos and descriptions of mine into such a format, if it doesn't cost so much as to deplete my progeny's inheritance, lol. Might make nice gifts for some folk. Or "sell" on eBay? Etsy? LOLOLOL

This is so lovely. Looking forward to more. I realize it's still early in the photos, but maybe don't think of it as a decline. It's transitioning- again. What once was wild became a carved out space with lawn. That transitioned into lovely and varied gardens. Sometimes that transitions into more wild spaces again. It may not be intentional, but it sounds like it's working :)

In remembrance of the great Dickey Betts, co-founder and guitarist with the Allman Brothers Band. He died this week at the age of 80.

The song Melissa by the Allman Brothers is about a man who regrets his choices and longs for his true love, Melissa.

The tubes you got may have a very poor CRI, color rendering index.

I know my niece was able to get a new module for a RH lamp, but it was a new lamp. I am talking about down the line at some point. 700 is a lot for a disposable lamp. I know some fixtures use LED tape and you can replace the tape if necessary.

Awesome plants guys! Jay, nice trilliums. I just went to Bowman Hill wildflower preserve and was blown away by all their trilliums.

I started with 7 Antennaria plugs I grew from prairie moon seed, then I started some seed from Toadshade and planted it next to the original clump, so I hope they are making viable seed now.

Iris I love that red buckeye!

Got some Mayapple popping up behind the the Dutchmans breeches

Raised bed in shade.

All these are Tall Bellflower. They will be beautiful.

I have the approval to plant this area out to where the Vinca have spread. Over time I will sneak natives into it until it's totally native.

Caulophyllum thalictroudes. I collected Blue Cohosh years ago, having no idea what it was at the time. They declined when I cut down the Redbud that was shading them. I'm planting what remains in the shade that it needs.

Collinsonia canadensis. The past 2 years have been so dry that they didn't produce seed.

Some Tall Nettle, Urtica gracilis in a wild spot.

Wall to wall Creeping Charlie, Glechoma hederacea

Spring Beauties in lawn.

There's a dead buckthorn in background. Im going to cut it down and plant a living fence of Sambucus canadensis. Im considering removing the wooden planks and turning the raised bed into a mound.

This one Rue Anemone is all I have. Need more.

Trillium sessile, Campanulastrum americanum, Stylophorum diphylum and Mertensia virginica.

Hydrophyllum virginicum, Hydrophyllum appendiculatta.

Blue Cohosh, Wood Poppy, Early Figwort, Carex jamesii, Dead Hosta walking. The deer can help themdelves to the Hosta. They've been grazing some Carex.

I was just thinking about the two other threads I’ve posted about houses being torn down — one a significant old house in Dallas in perfect condition, razed to build a modern home, and a historically significant house in San Francisco, with stunning interior stained woodwork throughout, all painted stark white with gray.

In the first, a vitriolic poster I didn’t know came on and berated me in several paragraphs, with her point being that old houses in Dallas should be torn down. Her kneejerk insinuations about me/others who were sad a beautiful old home was razed were wrong and outrageous.

The latter, I made the mistake of tagging the design board … a poster came on and asked me if blonde was my real hair color because my thread (and I) was so stupid, it was none of my business what homeowners do, etc. Other insults followed, I can’t remember them.

Anyway, hopefully this thread about a house on a house site won’t spark that level of self-righteous indignation and personal insults, but who knows anymore. 😅

Ollie, I’m with you. Every time I walk through my neighborhoods, another house has been painted white, or grey or blue. Wood, or brick, and even stone! It’s starting to look very bland and cold. I was especially surprised when the pretty brick home kitty-corner was painted grey…and the house next door to it was already grey!

I never thought I could fault Chris Pratt for anything, until now.

I don't mind too much when an existing home, that's perhaps a bit tired on the outside, is painted white or gray. There's only so much a homeowner can do to refresh an existing house exterior. What really bothers me are all the new-build farmhouses. Like, really? You're starting from scratch and can build any style, but you choose this?

Remove the existing shrubs--both badly pruned and badly placed-- and pull the beds out at least 6 feet from the house.

A better picture must show the entire house head on from enough distance to see what's on both sides. We also need to know your zone, general geographic location and the direction the house faces.

The shutters should also go.

I've been on Gardenweb since the early 2000s. I spent most of my time on the gardening side. The Perennials forum had a converastions side then and I became a part of the 'Idylls' group. met them for a garden tour up in PA one year. Wonderful group of gardeners. Then, they switched over to fb and I left that site a couple of years ago. Still kept in touch with a couple of them and met up for our spring nursery crawl as we called it. It was fun back then. I did get a kick out of Spike and never got sent to the teacups. Oh and of course, Hot Topics. ;-)

It was That Home Site and I loved it! Paid the $15 to Spike, never went to the teacups (I'm a good girl.)

The KT intimidated me at first, so I just lurked for a few years. I was mainly on the Sewing Forum where I had a lot of fun with Budster!

Moni stopped by for a night last year!

I love making my little "click" bags and having give aways!

One of my friend's kids was whining one day that they spent more money on the dog than they did her, and Momma retorted "Yeah well the dog is nicer to me than you are." 😆

The costs of vet care are skyrocketing, like everything. Still the best cost / benefit ratio around though, IMO. I don't have human children, but my dogs are my furry kids and wow do they add so much joy to my life. Also, they get me up off my butt for 4 long walks around the neighborhood every day. I know most of my neighbors thanks to those walks and the exercise is good for all of us.

My neighbors have two standard poodles. Foxwell was a therapy dog flunky. He didn't pass his final test. So my neighbors got an excellently trained dog that is a joy to have around. Then they adopted Leo from an abusive situation. He had baggage but it didn't take long for Foxwell to show him the ropes and that people can be good. He is doing well now and they are a joy to see walking around the neighborhood. Maybe you could find a dog that has failed his final test and will come fully housebroken and well trained even. Good luck in your search.

I have always been low maintenance skin care wise. I wash my face with mild soap or baby shampoo (to remove eye makeup). I may spread some hand cream (Jergens original) on my face if there is some left on my hands after using it for my legs and elbows.

(My skin has gotten very dry the last 2 years (medicine side effect) I now add Aquaphor to my Jergens. The Aquaphor isn’t going to do anything other than make me feel less dry.)

My dermatologist told me to continue what I was doing because my parents were the people who deserved thanking for the few wrinkles that I have on this old face.

The lines and sags could be minimized by fillers and temporarily eradicated by surgery, if I cared.

Genes and luck have much to do with your skin. I spent most of my life outside, with no sunscreen. I should be a raisin, really.

This is my favorite Homeworthy of all the ones we have seen. Miller could not be more charming and his home is one I could live in for the rest of my life. He is not at all 'braggy' despite being (obviously) a man of means.

There are so many things that just made me smile as he intends: the butterfly, the wallpaper he turned sideways, the painted floors, the down cushions, and most of all, the dogs. He is certainly grounded and down-to-earth. Leo the Lion is something I would snatch up in a fire, too, since we called one of our dogs "Our Lion" and I have looked for the perfect lion since 2017 to honor him.

Thanks for this one Gizmo. I have bookmarked it and shared it, too.

I love almost everything about this home, and Lewis Miller is so charming. The thing I did not like is the kitchen. While lovely, it seems too dark to me without enough counter space to really prep/cook. There are too many items on the counters. However, he did say that he isn't the one doing the cooking, so maybe it works for him. Thanks for sharing Gizmo.

Okay, so I pretty much like everything in this house. The typical floral designer makes in the 70Ks toward the top end, the typical event designer $100K

The light fixtures in this guys kitchen list for $3966 each and I see three. This is not his only house. He has a place in NYC and I think he mentioned another place "up north".

I know that we generally want to see exceptional stuff. But these shows are starting to sound like the old House Hunters joke about "I breed hamsters". "I am a stay at home mom, and I make custom tea cozies" "Our budget is $2M, cash"

Virginia bluebells are ephemeral and will die back and disappear until next year. Other things you plant will fill in that empty space after they die.

Virginia bluebells are not at all the same plant as the bluebells that inhabit gardens in the PNW. Those are bulbs in the genus Hyacinthoides and include Spanish bluebells (H. hispanica), English bluebells (H. non-scripta) and a hybrid between the two (H. massartiana). Massartiana is the one most often found here, it is extremely weedy and spreads both by seeds and by bulbs.

I've had to deal with it in all of my gardens and it is a major PITA!!

Patterns like that, however pretty they may be, make me dizzy. I discovered this after I wallpapered a feature wall in my bedroom in San Francisco with antique wallpaper in 1977. By this time I was getting weary of Victorian architecture as well.

This room reminds me of Laura Ashley from the 1990s, which I guess is considered retro by now. I liked that sort of style when I was a small child.

I like the sofa very much, and it reminds me of a sofa design that my boss did in 2014 that we unfortunately never produced. Her design did not have tufting, but it did have loose upholstery to the floor, and she called it the "Draped Slip Cover" Sofa. We did manufacture an almost identical coffee table, however, with a lacquered linen wrap finish.

I have a few pieces of floral fabric, very similar to what is on the chair and pillow, in my collection that I have not used yet.

The table, the mashup chandelier, and the Scalamandre Le Tigre all keep it from being too retro.

I am planning on using chintz in my new sunroom, so I guess that is a nod to the Grandma Chic look too.

Do you have any plantings in the section across the driveway? If not, depending on space, I would put in a couple of trees and some shrubs to provide for privacy from the road. Pots on either side of the door would be a nice addition and provide color. To make specific plant recommendations we would need to know where you are located-nearest city and zone.

In keeping with the style proposed yesterday you mentioned you liked, here is an idea showing a gable if that's what you want to do. The existing porch (one step up from the driveway) would have to be enlarged to allow space for the gable and the pergola on the right would will also give you seating space. The pergola can be done in a stained wood as shown or painted white like the trim of the house, both are nice. I would then suspend a pendant light in the gable instead of sconces flanking the front door.
