Having seen the whole room, I would not paint the cabinets. They look quite good, as is. A good paint job by a cabinet pro (not a house painter) will cost you $$$$. What is dating your kitchen are the chandelier, island seats, and that thing behind the stove.

I would replace the backsplash and investigate replacing the OTR microwave with a true vent hood. These simple changes will cost you far less and yield a nice change.

A good place to start is to find rug dealers in your area and visit the stores in person. Most rug dealers will allow you to bring a rug home to try out and some will even let you pick several rugs in the store and they will then bring them all out to your house to compare. I've never felt pressured to buy any of the rugs when I didn't find one I really like when I tested them out in my home. Just part of doing business and establishing a relationship with customers.

We might suggest looking at some chairs with some curve to them. Please take a moment to look through our designs to help you more with your chair selection:

Hi LG- Please think about who will be sitting in the chair. If it will be a large man, maybe he wants a large sturdy leather chair, and there are many beautiful ones with a more contemporary look.

Or will it be someone with a bad back?

These are things to think about.

Please don't purchase a chair without having the intended person sit in it for a while in the store.

Love that fabric and love nosy doggie!

To help with suggestions, what kind of work equipment will need to be in there? Do you work from home?

Do you have a desk yet, or one picked out? Will you need shelving or a bookcase(s)?

There are lots of posters here great with room layouts (I’m not one of them), the more context the better. :)

Love the fabric!

I would love green on the walls too, it would feel just like a hug.

Maybe if you have bookcases you can paint the inside of the bookcases that dark green?

I don't know what type of work you do, and if you have a storage closet in there.

Most of the photos of home offices I see online and in magazines do not show adequate storage for office supplies, computer equipment and supplies, miscellaneous electronic equipment, books, and files and e-data storage.

Please carefully plan out what you already have and how you project your your needs to change.

I would not pour any money into a house, that has some not so great schools. Save all the money you can, and find a house in another location, that has good schools, where you wont have to move, in a few years. Someone above mentioned, your garage not supporting an upper level. Thats one big thing you would have to find out, because, a lot of garages are not built to support and upper level, so the garage, may have to be torn down, and rebuilt too.

The addition you're contemplating will likely be far more expensive than you think. Save your money, see if interest rates fall and keep looking in towns with better schools. You would probably come out ahead buying a fixer upper and renovating in a better area.

@shirlpp the guest bedroom and 2 closets are for my parents. they will be living in that mini apartment space - its a living room, bathroom, and bedroom with a separate entrance. There are 7 people in the home so we need the closet space unfortunately

Where you have written Living Room in blue, that is where I would put your office.

If there is no wall or door between there and the kitchen, erect it.

It is up to you if you want a fireplace in there.

It is very convenient for you to be next to the kitchen in case you have something in the oven you want to check on.

I also like it's location farther away from the family room to cut down on the noise from the children in there.

Depending on what you do in your office and how sensitive to noise you are, you might want to think about doing something to the walls to make it more impervious to the noise from the children in the family room.
