The Prestige Buffalo grass plugs we went with in place of nla Turffalo have been great - with one exception I suspect is common to all Buffalo grass strains: it can be badly burned by pet urine. Doesn't kill it, but will degrade its appearance through much of the growing season. We've kept it and like it in our small backyard lawn, but went with Palisades Zoysia when we replanted the front to avoid the burned spots in our neighborhood of dog enthusiasts.

A Hoffman Nursery blog post gave a good summary of our main reason for sticking with female plugs/sod for an urban buffalo grass lawn: Buffalo Grass is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The male flowers are on small, comb-like spikes that hover above the foliage. Female flowers cluster on short stems down in the leaves.

While they also mentioned that they like the look of the taller male flowers, we didn't think they'd work in our urban lawn setting and we'd end up mowing more often to keep any male flower heads down.

For the dog spots, try dropping a heaping handful of table sugar on each spot. Water it down (not away) and give that 3 weeks to work and see if the grass doesn't return growing greener and taller than the surrounding grass.
