I'm so sorry, barncatz. How much would you feel like taking on? Adopting a senior or special needs horse, having a couple boarding (insurance issues?) or something different like a few sheep. They say time heals all wounds, but I don't know who they is. I still get teary-eyed when I think about our two horses, and they've been gone 24yrs.

Beautiful land! Maybe have a couple alpacas or goats.🐐 They are less maintenance than horses, and they can cheer you up in no time.

I'd like to also say "go for it," but your post saying you'd still have the SUV and you work from home 4 days a week leaves me to think you would not have access to the SUV DD is using or driving. Question is, when you go to the store(s) on your days off, will it be sufficient for bringing everything home?

I buy in bulk, go to multiple stores shopping, and/or antiques. I also travel back and forth to visit children and grands. So replacing my large MB SUV with the newer model was the answer to DH's question last year.

Do having a Corvette as your "only" car work for you? Only you can answer that question.

The cabinet makers can make the cabinets work either way, so it’s really up to your desires.

Example of an angle.

" But that does deprive you of a nice angle",

My general comment from a design standpoint is this:

Random angles cut out of one corner of a room are rarely "nice", especially when they are not balanced by another one, or something else. They work or make sense only under limited circumstances and this room is not one of them. Doing things like this for "architectural interest" is one of the sets of Emperor's New Clothes foisted on homebuyers by designers of McMansion-ish houses with amorphously shaped open plan interiors starting in the early 1990s and a lot of people bought into it.

If it were "nice", there wouldn't be such a problem figuring out what to do with it, here.

Not sure of the height you want for the mantel but the width of Allison’s drawing is just right IMO.

I just drew for width, not height.

Thought this picture might help visually regarding the mantle’s size and location.

Noted you had envisioned the look below (with a light mantle). Just wonder with going for a formal coastal feel, have you considered any other designs. It’s such an important feature; think bigger picture and the effect will have in the room.

On another note, suggest adjusting cabinet’s shelf spacing for more consistency (when wider, accessories normally look better). Adding sconces and complementary hardware would be nice additions as well.

Without seeing a furnished room, it’s hard to suggest a look, but thought these examples might give you pause and just search on line (Pinterest, Houzz, Instagram) for formal coastal fireplaces.

Beagles, mantel beams like the one in Kswl's first photo can be found wherever beams are sold. Usually salvaged. Sometimes hand scraped to look old, when not old. We have previously bought beams, etc from two different lumber yards.

The last time I was in Scotkand was on an early spring trip in mid-March and it was freezing cold. And it was twenty years ago… during that time temps have trended upwards in early summer, so we’re expecting a low in the high 40’s at night high 60’s in daytime at best. Basically it’s the weather we are having in Georgia this week so I am taking note of what I need to wear here to be confortable, then mentally add in wind 🙂.

I’m going to try my thin padded jackets under the raincoat for warmth, Roarah. I don’t love taking sweaters because they can get shapeless after a couple of wears and are hard to dry flat if they get wet. If the jackets won’t fit under my raincoat I may buy the ultralight down vest to take.

Outside, I don’t actually own a hoodie .... for me that’s a fashion rubicon I have no plans to cross. I do have one sweatshirt but as a warm layer it’s not very practical. I may end up wearing a wool shawl under or over my raincoat.

Birdies are a more substantial shoe than a Rothy, good point about uneven surfaces. We aren’t doing much general sightseeing, mostly tours of historic churches. The main focus is the music. There won’t be any hiking or anything like that.

Good point about the hotels without elevators… when we get the accomodation list I will check their websites for that feature, thank you!

Allison, I may let DH take pants also😎

Late to this as usual 😁

We're also fortunate to have no lack of places to buy plants - from the big box stores to local nurseries, a number specializing in natives.

That said, I prefer plant sales/festivals to stores, since they often have more unusual and/or hyper local varieties.

There's a garden club nearby that holds sales a few times yearly, and a number of other local festivals/events too. I have an unnamed OGR rose bush I bought from them years ago that I think is Louis Phillipe. It thrives with little care. I think I paid a couple bucks for it.

I'm a long time member of the committee - and in charge of the children's crafts tent - for a 2 day Arbor/Earth Day festival that our city's been sponsoring for well over 25 years now. It's huge and vendors come from all over - a couple hundred of them. I try to hold off until the festival to buy my plants for the year - it's at the end of April. I've gotten many interesting natives, tropicals, herbs and edibles over the years for very little expense. People come from far and away to attend and shop.

Our local university's ag/horticultural dept. has a yearly sale as well.

One of my fave booths at our festival has been the county jail horticultural program. They always had great deals on good stuff, and the vocational training for prisoners is a worthwhile effort, IMO.

Well, not until October! Dutch Wood is really in demand so they have a 12-week wait even for local projects. And they are coming up from PA to FL to put my cabinets in, so I had to wait even longer until they were able to work that into the schedule. It is well worth it because the cabinets are so, so much better AND cheaper! Esp. since we don't be back in FL after April until November anyway!

I grew up with a white kitchen and probably for that reason I wanted white cabs in our reno. Thus following the trend to some degree.

"So glad the two toned cabinet look is a thing of the past." "That two-toned thing was bad."

We did the two-color cab thing, but not uppers/lowers which I agree doesn't often work well. Our choices are kind of like @chicagoans in that we used different colors to distinguish between functions / rooms / uses. The walkway behind the island is *the* path to the rest of the house, so I wanted to distinguish the working kitchen (white) from the pantry/bar/storage wall (BM unusual gray).

We also used brass (unlacquered bronze) knobs, pulls, latches and we do have the exceedingly popular Taj Mahal counters. so, following trends there. I wasn't really interested in TM until we had a hard time finding a counter that had grey, brown, and white. I almost went with a quartz but the day I went to the stoneyard to purchase the quartz, three gorgeous TM slabs beckoned me. So much more depth and beauty, with the added bonus that TM is virtually indestructible.

I put the phrase "I hate white kitchens" in the pretty bad GW-House search box and on the first page I got a post called "I hate white kitchens?" and one called "White Kitchens--Trend Over" both from 2012.

So there is really some validity to the argument that white kitchens aren't really a trend at all, although I will say that with the many choices in white quartz that have come on the market, and with the return to favor of light finished floors, the white has become more uniformly, brilliantly white.

Also, I grew up in a house with an all white kitchen with black hardware and some stainless appliances (some white) from 1969. They weren't trending then, but neither were my parents complete innovators. They had probably seen something somewhere

Also when it comes to all these bleached light woods for flooring and cabinetry that have been popular again for a bit, and the color pink popping up? Does anybody remember the revulsion people had for um...pickled finishes and the color pink anything not all that long ago?

( I've had pink in two of the three kitchens I have designed for myself, somewhere starting 28 years ago)

Why are people harshing on the OP for expressing an opinion and getting a conversation started? I totally disagree with the OP and love white kitchens. But, I am hardly offended by her opinion. If you consider her post to be negativity, I hate to see how you'd react to family dinner at our house!

Bathroom - new counter with only one undermount sink. 8" faucet (sink on the right side). Sink does not need to be centered. Framed mirror. Not fond of the towel ring locations. You could just fold a hand towel on counter. (Currently: DH's hangs, mine does not.) I would probably paint the walls and get a pretty rug. It looks like your tile has some brown tones in it, so cabinets are okay for now.

Kitchen, add window treatment and a runner (both with color) along that wall. Pair of comfortable counter stools with color. In at least one countertop corner, add some pottery pieces (again, color).

I would not go crazy until after you have lived there awhile. Once you add furniture, art and accessories the things that bother you know either won't bother you at all or not as much. Then you can make any decisions slowly.

I like the kitchen and the livingroom. I think the bathroom could use a single bowl, framed mirror and new light fixtures. I wouldn't paint the vanity or the cabinets. Nor would I paint the walls a color, add color with accessories. Maybe change the shades in the kitchen light fixtures, so that the bulbs are not bare.

Your ceiling looks pretty low...you might try framing out your pendant lights like this (look at pinterest for coffered ceiling ideas-there are tons), not quite as deep as this. Then, line the inset piece with beadboard, where the one below is painted. Then wrap the island in matching light colored beadboard. (See thriftydecorchick.com for all the ways she has spiffed up her island, cabinets, etc. She makes it look sooo easy, LOL!) Need to lighten things up...don't forget, a small cute lamp on a kitchen counter adds another layer of light and is an easy find at Hobby Lobby. If you look across to the fireplace...leave it white (the TV will cover a lot of that wall) and paint the area around the windows something a little deeper color for contrast. Find a fabric (pillows, drapes) or a nice area rug that you love to pull your colors from...do NOT paint and then shop, it's just way toooo hard that way!

I would not do a U-shaped kitchen. It is too confining. The space to the left can be used by adding a pair of chairs or a desk area. Need more storage? A freestanding piece to hold extra dishes, seldom used things or store bulk purchased items.

What does the kitchen look like now? What don't you like about it? What are your goals for the remodel?

For example, when I remodeled the kitchen in our previous home, the goals were" more storage, more functional storage, especially near the range, improved prep space, get things off the counters. I achieved this in a U-shaped kitchen without drastic changes to the footprint, though I did move both fridge and range a foot away from the sink.

I can’t do anything with the pocket door wall because it is housing a new post that will be carrying the load of a new massive flush beam that runs from the end of the pocket door wall all the way to the exterior wall that the range is on.

I couldn’t agree more with what you all are saying. And Jilly, I could have written what you write as it captures several things that drive me crazy about concert behavior.

At the last big outdoor concert we attended, several people from the cheap seats came down to vacant seats in front of us for the lead-in acts, stood, danced, and held up their phones for photos for over 30 minutes. They changed seats as people arrived and told them they had their seats, and finally security ushered them out of the area. And the drunks must have gone in and out at least a dozen times past us in our aisle seats. Until they started passing their doobs. Guess I should have known.

Another thing that mostly younger people seem to do at some of the Broadway touring series shows is ’WhooHoo’ wildly after every.dang.song. Most of us season ticket holders just roll our eyes at the poor etiquette.

And the problem in our current climate is that you can't really do anything about it because the people who behave this way don't think they are doing anything wrong at all, it's nobody's business how they behave except their own, and they can behave however they want.

I don't go to the movies here at all anymore--actually there aren't any in my immediate area, now. Years ago (and granted the theaters drew from bad neighborhoods) I knew someone (I was not there) who complained to management about a person who was talking loudly during the movie, and someone tackled the woman just as she was about to stab the person who complained with a knife. And there was a shooting in the same theater over a similar incident. And I think things have only gotten worse with people's behaviors.

I was also on a train where they had to call the police to remove someone who was talking on their cell phone on the quiet car. All the conductors said was that she had to move to another car. She refused and was screaming and yelling about being "Disrespected" and nobody was going to tell her what to do, and she needed to be restrained by the police. I was also on a local train where hundreds of people had to get off the train, and the police came, because of one passenger.

And of course we see how people behave on airplanes all the time.

Allison, we have those oaks too. Probably 3/4 of the leaves came off last Fall, and the top 1/4 are coming off now. No problem as we will mulch. Thankfully we don't have much problem with the tassels as the oaks are at the front of our property almost to the road. I guess what lands in the yard gets mulched too.

Such beautiful weather although we will get cold Monday and Tuesday and then warm up again. We will be up and down for a bit. We do most of our yard work ourselves. I love gardening and my husband does the rest although we do occasionally get help with big stuff. We did a good bit of weeding this afternoon and I have been looking at english roses. I am feeling the need for a new rose! : ) My candytuft is at it's peak and I hate to see it go. It's probably one of the whitest white blooming plant. Hoping to get more yard work done next week! I'm thinking of adding some riverstone to a couple of spots. We have some flagstone but we were at a restaurant last week that had some areas of riverstone and some areas of flagstone and I like the combo. We'll see! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I needed to replace some parts of a handbell set I had borrowed from the chuch. that they weren’t using. I asked a bell friend if I was ordering the right pieces and was it a replacement I could do myself, and she gave me the name of her contact at the foundry. So I emailed her to double-check I was ordering the right parts, and she asked who had bought them, they might be under warranty. And they were! They are 35 years old and haven’t been played in 10 or 15 years, and they sent the parts for just the $5 shipping and a photo of the bad parts.

I was just hoping to get a coupon code or something, not get $175 worth of parts for $5! It’s nice to have them sounding good again.
