I would do neither.

If you need a shelf I would modify the top rail of the wainscotting in the area over the toilet to make it shelf depth

No to the shelf. It seems "wrong" in that spot ... the mirror is rather bossy, and it doesn't need another focal point right next to it. Instead, go with a piece of artwork. Choose artwork with a good bit of neutral to tie into what you already have ... but also with a secondary pop of color.

You have "too much" going on near the floor. The strong floor and runner are both nice, but they aren't really friends.

And the wainscotting is a strong feature. Maybe not in a good way.

I think the thing is, TOO MANY STARS, and they're competing instead of blending together -- and the only supporting cast item is the shower curtain.

I think a contrasting color for the backsplash, or you'll drown in a sea of beige, especially with travertine floors. Try brown as someone suggested, to work with the darker color in the backsplash.

And lay them in a running bond pattern (what you called "subway"). Stacked is more contemporary and your style looks to be more traditional.

I love the SW Jasper dark green music room. I assume the same color was used in what I think might be a home office, even on the ceilings and door. I have seen lots of pictures showing how amazing dark green is in rooms not blessed with natural light; it's nice to see that dark green also looks good in rooms that do have natural light. And it's reassuring to see how good it looks with frosty pastel furniture in the well-lit spaces. I've seen other pictures of dark green rooms with no light, and in those, bright accents like chartreuse or neon blue bring the look together.
I love the transformation of the space next to the kitchen from boring layered horizontal lines that made the space look unfinished to bold dramatic vertical lines. Simple things like creating that strong vertical fireplace, whiting out the adjacent choppy areas, and aligning the table with the fireplace doubled the apparent size of the room and made the space so much more calming. I love it when basic principles of art are utilized in interior design.

I agree with choosing paint after furnishings. At least a few times I limited myself after painting first then having to choose a bedspread or curtains that worked well with the paint color. Even neutral paint shades can run warm or cool and so the overall look can feel out of sync when furnishings are opposite. Lesson learned! Good article- thanks.

Islav2012, if you are picking paint first, I guess you must be good at seeing undertones of paint. For me, it is alot easier to to pick paint colors after identifying undertones in the fixed materials of carpet, upholstery, etc., especially if you are selecting a neutral paint color to pull the room together. If you have a particular art or carpet, they have limited colors. With paint, there are so many colors, so you can find a perfect match (or accent) to the make the room beautiful by selecting color from the items in the room. For example, lots of folks think beige is beige. It is not. It can have undertones of gold, pink, or orange. If your carpet is pink beige, it is not going to look good with orange beige paint. Even white paint can look blue, yellow, or another color in its undertones. Just my perspective.

Best and easiest way to pick backsplash. Buy white poster board and place backsplash samples against it, then place that in vertical position on top of counter. You can then better see undertones in countertop, cabinets. Don't use brown cardboard...

Andrea, your splash and grout are fantastic with your counters and cabinets. Your kitchen should be an example for anyone searching on how to bridge off whites in a kitchen. really beautiful.

the 2nd photo is more pleasing. When I install sconces, I generally put them at eye level, but depending on the style of sconce and the room features, it's a personal decision.

I would leave the stone and paint the wood to gain contrast
