When we built our home in 2000, I insisted on lights in every room. I always hated having to light my living room in other houses with floor and table lamps and had a hard time finding nice ones that either wouldn't be pushed over by active children or wouldn't hurt someone when they were. I have some pendant lights and a couple of chandeliers as well as lights on our ceiling fans but every room has recessed lights, with directional ones in our vaulted great room. I haven't noticed the problems mentioned here, perhaps because we had an experienced electrician who did a great job placing them. When I want the room lit, I want it well lit and I'd much rather have the lights tucked away in the ceiling, which, as was mentioned in an earlier comment, I don't stare at. I often don't even notice when one burns out until it gets replaced and all of a sudden I can see my crochet or sewing without straining. Another plus that wasn't mentioned here is the fact that I don't have to dust them. That's on the top of my pluses right now because I recently cleaned the pendants and need to do the same with the chandeliers.
