Using fish emulsion/kelp liquid fertilizer..questions..
Comments (20)You might want to review the attached link. There is a great deal of mythology associated with foliar fertilizing. Generally I recommend against it - not a reliable or very efficient method for plants to obtain necessary nutrients and will often lead to increased disease issues.......like most other overhead or foliar water will do. As far as the quality of the product is concerned, fish/kelp/seaweed emulsion is one of the very few soluble or liquid organic fertilizers. And is therefore a great organic product to use with containers, as granular or powdered organics are not very effective under those conditions. Also fine for any inground plants as well. And the stuff has a fair amount of micronutrients, which is also above average for most other organic fertilizers. So all in all, a pretty decent product to use, just not ideal if used solely as a foliar application. Here is a link that might be useful: the myth of foliar feeding...See MoreFish Emulsion..EEWW
Comments (31)F4F- It has been windy here. It blew the tops off some young 2 footers and destroyed a bunch of flowers. Hope it stops my plants are flushing . Then that is spring in Texas. I am the what if and why person. LOL too boring just as is. I start small and work up until I get results one way or another. I used mop and glow on my offshore boat made it look good all the time. Also hit my Teak with transmission fluid made it look like a million. This break your back work is for the Birds. Trial and few errors. Using Teak oil was my worst error stains everything, tranny fluid worked so much better. I have a super sniffer also. I was in VFD for 10 years and could sniff one out and locate direction. Bad for winter winds and cedar. I can tell what is cooking and what ingredients are in it. The summer is good, wind off the water carries no pollen....See MoreFish Emulsion
Comments (6)I use Eleanor's VF-11 year round, every watering. It's not so much a fertilizer as it is a mineral boost. I've never used fish emulsion just because I've read it's pretty stinky and I don't do well with bad odors. I don't let mine get too dry - some do better if they're allowed to get a little drier than others, but I've found that most do better if they're watered when they START to get dry. I want to stress, however, that I have mine in a loose, fast draining mix. And as for sun, most of mine stay in my GH and sunroom year round (to avoid the dreaded aphids...) and they all get full morning sun. Some sit on the top shelf in my GH and get sun until mid-afternoon. Now, the glass in my GH roof has a coating that reflects the heat, but still allows the sun through, so it's not as intense as being outside in full sun through mid-day. But it's intense enough that I get some really pretty coloring on certain Hoyas. I'm sure a lot of these conditions depends on where you live... Denise in Omaha...See MoreFish emulsion
Comments (26)ken - I've never figured if fish pee as well as poop, but I suspect they do. We just don't see it with them living in a liquid environment. I know that I frequently test my aquariums for nitrates, nitrites and ammonia which can build up to toxic levels if water is not changed or the biofilter is damaged. (thats good bacteria consuming the waste). The value of both body parts of fish and their poop are realized after the bacterial process is complete, so the digested fish ditritus could also be considered an emulsion. It differs from pet waste in that it contains virtually no fat. Most fish food is made of vegetable matter such as soy products, kelp, algaes, etc., or small shrimp like crustaceans like krill, brine shrimp, etc. Regardless, aquarium water is high in nitrogen in some form and does well used on plants. Fish flesh, like is ours is high in water content. When it breaks down you get emulsion, which is also high in nitrogen. So it works similarly to change water from aquariums. Particularly when I am attempting to breed a species of cichlid I may change water 10-20% each day. People normally don't realize that even the best maintained aquarium contains polluted water (sic. high in nitrogen waste products). It can be a trigger to potential spawners that says "there are too many fish already" and they won't spawn. Frequent large quanties of water changes, and quickly loweriing and then raising temperature (which assimilates spring rain purging polluted water)will cause fish to spawn. So there is a benefit of using aquarium change water on plants even if large volume water changes are being made in the aquaria. With the drought conditions this year its a good way to take care of two things at once. Les...See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
