Quiet Walk? Floor Muffler? Need Help Choosing Underlayment?
Comments (79)This post has some misleading comments regarding ecocork. I am investigating underlayment for vinyl plank. If you look at the actual test results from NGC testing services for the delta IIC of quietwalk LV, floormuffler lvt encore, and ecocork, they are all tested using the same 6 inch concrete slab (not 8 inches). The IIC and STC have other included materials in the test like insulation, gypsum ceiling, etc. But the delta IIC has only the concrete slab and measures the difference in sound dampening with and without the concrete slab in place telling you the true dampening of the underlayment itself. By this measure the quietwalk comes out on top with a delta IIC of 28, ecocork at 23 and floormuffler at 22. If you look at the frequencies, you can see that the quietwalk is the only material that has some degree of dampening of the lowest 100 hz tested around 5 db. The testing is slightly different in that the quietwalk was tested with a 5 mm vinyl plank on top whereas the ecocork was tested with a layer of engineered wood on top. The thickness of the engineered wood was not given. Floormuffler does not have a link for the actual test results. Comments (8)Thanks for the replies. A little more context. The current windows are weather shield, dual pane casements. The sound is entering the house primarily through the windows. The third floor, master bedroom is the second loudest room in the house next to the first-floor. The noise level on the third floor is greater than the second even though the second is a wall of glass in the form of a sliding door. In terms of cost, while my aim is to be cost-effective, I'm willing to pay a premium if it addresses the issue. My greatest concern is buying expensive windows that may provide only marginal improvement. I have read a lot on here and other forums. It sounds like installation is key; triple windows may be equal to double in terms of effectiveness; and, laminate may help some, but spacing between lites is the greater determinative factor. With this said, there does not seem to be a lot of info on which companies make good windows. Maybe they are all the same and it is just a matter of finding a company that can best meet the above. Alternately, some companies have posted STC ratings that are higher than others. I am wondering if their numbers can be trusted?? (Sorry for the somewhat run-on. Pecking on my phone :) Thanks! Comments (47)That one is a beaut Todd, lol... @svayda : that is a good reason to look at the entire scope of the quote as well. Sure an excellent window may not be worth an exorbitant premium in theory, if the baseline quote is just enough to cover beer money for that installer and an installation like that which Todd pictured is in the offing, the higher price could be worth every penny. Make sure that installation details, product options, and company reputation and history are all apples to apples (at least within reason) when comparing price....See MoreMarvin Windows vs Hurd/Sierra Pacific Windows - which is better?
Comments (75)Moisture between the glass would not be caused by poor installation. Rather, it would be caused by a defective manufacturing issue or due to some type of unusual situation where the normal wear was affected. For instance, extreme variations in temperature due to orientation or something going on regarding the interior of your home. I design and specify windows for homes in Florida almost all of them on the water or close by. Sierra Pacific offers a 30 year warranty on its 2605 finish and 20 year warranty on its patented Coreguard wood treatment and I would consider those windows. Andersen performs well too but they reduce their 20 year warranty to 10 years when on the coast. In my 40 year career, I have had great success with Andersen and SP and would run away from Pella if you are looking for an aluminum clad wood window. Just my opinion based on more than a hundred installations....See MoreJason O
