I am new with avocados. I have had mine for about 8 months. It was about 3 feet high when I got it, now it about 6 high and growing like crazy. Some tips that I have learned along the way. Water. They don't like wet feet, trust me I almost killed mine. Depending on the soil you have, mine is heavy clay. It retains water too long, so I water it once a week with a soak hose in the middle of the summer. Now in the winter, I havent watered it since Thanksgiving and its still pushing new leaves. It rained last week and the soil is still moist. Fertilizer. I use it every 3 months. I use the same one you mentioned. Citrus & Avocado mix. Soil. When I planted in the ground, It was bald and limp. The air would bend it side to side. I placed a metal rod next to it and tight it. I dug a hole twice the size of the pot both wide and deep. I filled it with compost (homemade), composted cow manure, gypsum (they love it, I used 80 lbs of it),play sand, miracle grow garden soil (very little) and native soil. All mixed in to the hole. After about a month, I saw new growth coming out of it and it hasn't stopped. Sun. They love the sunlight. Mine is placed with no shade. Some of the leaves will get sunburn but its normal. Some people recommend adding water with white non latex paint and spraying the leaves and trunk. I was thinking of doing so, but I didn't and mine is doing pretty good with out it. Last. They like to be felt alone. This is the advice the person who sold it to me told me. Let it be, don't worry about it. Once established, they are very low maintenance. Don't rake up the leaves let them compost in the ground, they drop alot of leaves but if new ones are coming there's nothing to worry about it. This is why your tree has made it thru the "without love" period. I hope you found this helpful with your tree. PS. the pic was back in June. It had gotten bigger since then.

Well that is a bit cooler and not as dry as I guessed looking at the flat land and wide open sky - or should I say not quite as hot as I thought. Still probably needs 35-40 gallons per day in typical July/August, less with the unusual humidity we have had lately. Conventional wisdom on avos is nothing within the dripline except leaf litter, which you never remove. This promotes the soil conditions which allow the very shallow roots to have access to water and air that they need. I'm not familiar with all the details but understand that avo roots are very different than most trees. I would think that covering much of the root area with concrete like I see in your picture seems incompatible with the tree thriving. One friend put crushed rock under his 20 trees and nearly lost them all, finally resulting in hiring a professional to save them. Avos like lots of water but don't like their roots to be wet, one of the reasons many commercial groves were built on hillsides. Another friend had 80 trees on a hillside that was heavy clay but used to be a commercial growing area. He lost them all from too frequent watering. Because of the heavy clay, water would try to run off and he watered them lightly but often. They like to be watered deeply but the top should be fairly dry before watering them again. I'm not sure how you do that with the tiny area that isn't covered by cement. Hopefully someone will come along with more knowledge than me.

Rose, how sad to see such a majestic beauty go down. It had to be done. Long story short: At the corner of the yard at the house my family lived in for many years was a tall, beautiful, perfectly shaped pine tree; the kind with those long slender cones. It shaded and provided privacy for the front porch. My DH died; years later I sold the house. I often wake up with a song going through my mind. One morning, a year or so after I sold it, it was the old song "They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree." I went to work that day and my boss, who lived across the street from the house, asked me if I knew the pine tree had been cut down. I couldn't believe it. I had to go and see. There was the stump. No sign of rot showing. Unbelievable! We knew the history of the house and knew when it was built and by whom. Also had met a lady who was born in that house. The house was built about a hundred years ago and that tree had "always" been there. You had no choice but to let your tree go. I'll never understand why anyone would cut down a solid old healthy tree. Don't understand how the mind works when I woke up with that song playing in my brain either. You would need to lower the frequency of waterings while it settles into the new pot since there’s no roots to suck up the moisture from the new soil. How cold is it getting outside? An avocado is not going to grow very well indoors in the long-term.
