Gardening in Oz

Plant identification

Hello :)
I'm new here. My husband and I bought our first home a year ago and are currently staying to get stuck into the garden. I've next to no experience at this so doubtless will have lots of questions! Anyway I wondered if anyone could please tell me the name of this plant which was given to me? Also what sort of conditions it'll need if you know. Thank you! :)

Turning my head sideways, I'd say that's a fuchsia. There's a heap of information on growing them, just 'google' fuchsia or look up any gardening book.

If you just turn the PHOTO sideways, it's a salvia. You'll need to google or find a specialty site, it's one of the perennials.

I had not completely ruled out the idea of it being a weed. I didn't want to assume and yank it immediately due to finding rose bushes and a couple other plants that were making a come back from the year before. There are three of these 'weedy ground orchids' that are ironically growing evenly with two or so foot spacing in between. Plus my neighbors sunflowers wiggled their way through the fence into our yard. Thought I'd do some investigating and ask around before I went ahead and pulled the suckers out. :) Thanks for the input everyone! much appreciated

Much of California is hotter than Hell (100s F.) in summer east of the outermost coastal fringe*, hence the chronic problem with dangerous fires. It's right back of his new house. So, when you see something, say something. His children are old enough to understand what you tell them, although the youngest is only 4. It's all part of learning, out where they live. It sounds like you'd have to eat more than one berry to get really sick but it's not a chance you really want to take. Salvias are very easy to grow. They like full sun and rich composty soil. Water we'll until established and after that only when it really needs it. They are amazing plants. I love to pull out the flower and suck the nectar, my son calls it the "sweetie plant"

And unfortunately since GardenWeb merged with Houzz, the australian forums have disappeared. You will find others, but they are all USA based. :-((((((((

Salvias are wonderful plants. I've got a few varieties.

Thank you all! For some reason I only recently got updated of your replies but happily the Salvia is doing very well as I have it in a sunny spot :)
