Help identifying tree

Hi, Looking for help in identifying this tree. It's approximately 10mtrs tall and smooth bark. New leaves open in bowl like clusters. Northern NSW.

Gotta wonder, Ted, how do you do it? I looked at that and thought in some respects it resembled a syzygium! Is errr, 'Harpephyllum caffrum' an Aussie native?

any chance you could get a bit closer.. and show us a leave with a scale??? the round dark leaves remind me of purple smokebush... but im sure i dont know most CA alternatives.. so thats just a shot in the dark ... and you better hope its a shrub.. rather than a tree.. because its about 8 feet to close to the house for a tree ... ken

Hi Bill,

It's from Africa but if you remember we used to see a huge specimen of one of these at the Bot. Gardens during our "inspections" just outside the azalea beds. Its common name is Kaffir plum -- don't know if it's edible though.
