man its hard to see the slope sideways... or is it just me ... the pic is sideways for me ... i presume the rocks are on the high side??? and why do you presume it will stay damp.. if it is ON THE SLOPE ... or do you mean its at the bottom of the slope ... you havent lived there a whole year yet have you???? why do you think it will stay wet ... more facts please ... i am just wondering if you are making some faulty conclusions ... ken

my Chamaecyparis thyoides tend to be rather loose and sparse ... gorgeous in and of themselves... but not a screen as OP wants ... your description of your water situation is lacking... many plants can withstand a spring deluge .. or once in a while rainstorm accumulation ... its more a matter of how long the water stands there ... i would need to know soil type ... drainage ... time of year ... soil saturation other than the periodic spasm of too much water ... etc ... planting 'high' ... even just a foot can sometimes overcome the issue ... my favorite fall back for tall and thin is Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' .. once established.. they do about a foot per year ... i have one that is about 10 feet tall and 2 feet wide ... you must insure a single leader plant from youth ... and they should be rather cheap .. if you go small ... i even got some to root one time .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Bumping this because I have the same question. Planted a copper beech (Fagus sylvatica riversii) on the south side near the window and it appears to have croaked, don't know why. Another one fairly nearby croaked Spring 06. So although the copper beech is Lynn's favorite tree, we don't want to plant another one there to take its place. Discouraging to spend so much $$$ on trees that expire. This tree will get morning afternoon and evening sun and thus heat in summer. Eventually if the sequoias around it survive it will get some shade but it'll be near the roof so all that sun will hit it blazing over the roof. Resin, I'd love to use a purple oak if I could find one. A purple evergreen oak would be even better! Everything around this tree is blue or green so we're aiming for copper or purple foliage. It's a wet spot near a creeklet but we can build it up in a berm a bit. It's right by THE busiest bird feeding frenzy I've ever seen (pictures maybe by tonight) so its branches should be able to handle continual bird fluttering landings and take offs. Suggestions please!

Im assuming you're from the bp area? Im about an hour south of kato so we've got essentially the same microclimate. In my experience, even the arboretum pecans are pretty iffy in mn. You should remember that they have constant care and supervision. In my opinion they haven't proven themselves here yet.but its always worth a shot. My first choice would be the walnut. I have trees at my house that regularly withstand spring flooding without a problem. The juglone wont be a problem unless you plan on gardening underneath it, but walnuts can also be very messy for a front yard and thays something to remember. We are on the very northern edge of the range of Bitternut hickory. Imho it is a very beautiful tree that makes less of a mess, doesnt produce juglone, and has acceptable water tolerance. Occasionally i have noticed black knot on the bitternuts at the lake cabin, so be prepared for that. Oh that and the nuts would only be edible if you were totally indifferent to your taste buds. I guess what im saying here is, go with a hickory if you can. You'll be the only person in the county with one in your front yard.
