Texan needs help growin everlasting daisies...

I punched in everlasting daisies on the net & 4,000 articals from Aussies appeared...I guess nobody from America is growing them,,I ordered 4 pacs of seeds from S. Africa..3 of'um were fall plantings 1 was spring...Do i treat the seeds before planting or what?.hep me,hep me.....Marvin

Throw seeds on very sandy soil in late winter/early spring. Rake in lightly. That's it. You now are an expert on growing everlasting daisies.

Pat Austin: small & compact choice if you have morning sun spot. I have 2 Pat Austins - one in 3/4 sun, the other in 1/4 sun - both fried when the temp. is over 80 degrees. She's gorgeous here in our cool and wet spring/fall when it's raining all day with temp. below 70's. Pat Austins bloom well in my alkaline clay if given lots of water. Anne Boleyn - lots of people like this one, a light but good scent. Supposedly to be small. Portmeirion - I spent lots of time researching this one since I need a dark-pink for my garden. The info. I found - someone stated, "not much scent, but a work-horse". I didn't buy it since it's thorny. The Prince - I spent time researching this one. I changed my order and didn't get it, since my kid hates the color. The info I found: quite small & compact, morning sun only otherwise petals burn, great scent, good for vase, somewhat thorny. A Texan informed me that it does well in alkaline clay soil.

Shari, they use plantain in my yard. A common weed in many lawns and does spread. Mine is contained in an area where they shouldn't get out of control, but we'll see. Dwarf snaps are another host for them. But, in your area, I don't know how well the snaps will do, since they tend to die out in heat. I had a tall snap last year and it did kind of wimp along in the hotter part of the summer, but grew nicely in spring and fall. This year I purchased some dwarf snaps. I'm not too far from you (dallas?). I'm in OKC. I think the buckeyes have been known to use many plants as a host, though, so you might want to google Buckeye host plants. There is a website available for Texas host plants and butterflies. Try the Dallas Butterfly Association. They have quite an extensive list of various host plants for butterflies in Texas. Susan

Indu, you can buy them now, but I'd wait until it gets a little cooler to plant them. When planted before it gets so hot they grow long roots into the surrounding soil to support themselves when it does get hot and dry, but now their roots wouldn't have a chance to do that, and if the root ball dries out they are toast. If you can find them in a four inch pot you might want to transplant them into a gallon pot until you plant them in late Sept. or so.

Hi Tex. Some genera of everlastings are annuals and others are perennial plants. What they all seem to have in common is their love of Poor Sandy Soil. I don't know much about Texas weather, but they seem to like winter rains and a hot summer drought. If you have severe frosts in winter, try to sow them in early spring when most of the frosts are over. Then, as Robyn6014 says, sow the seed on the surface and carefully rake them in and keep them moist until they mature.

Marvin, sow the seeds in spring where they are to bloom, in full sunshine and well-drained soil. All climates suit. Water the young plants well. When they are established they are drought resistant. To dry the flowers, pick them just as they are opening and hang the bunches in a warm, dry place. Cheers, Rosewater. P.S. Don't know where in Texas you live, but Austin is one of Adelaide's sister cities. :)

Marvin, any chance you could give some reciprocal information on growing lisyanthus - which I know I mispelt and hope I am not wrong in thinking come from Texas. We get seedlings here but I have never had much success with them.
Re:Rosewater's comments about Austin, it is also one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Cathy, I know it's been six months since you asked, but I did find a reference to Lisyanthus --

Perhaps it will help? There are pictures, so you might at least be able to tell if this is the plant you have.
