Persistent Rose

Last year I posted a pic of a rose growing through wire mesh. the rose was hard pruned and this year(today I took a picture of the red Rose repeating the effort. She or he really wants its day in the sun!!

Christopher, I'm glad you took some precautions with Indigo. She not unmanageable but she's persistent. Rose de Rescht and suckering: My own-root 10-year-old plant slowly sends envoys abroad from the mother ship. It began after 5 or 6 years in the ground. Just a couple a year. A manageable invasion of my small bed. I read that Paul's plants have never suckered and he and I live in similar areas, so that is interesting info. And, no, my Rescht did NOT come from Heirloom unlike some other oddities in my garden. :-) She's been fine for me in full sun and part shade. I've grown her in both over the years. Deeper watering will encourage larger roots to grow deeper into the soil, which will help prevent some of the suckering. In these parts, "gardeners" love to "cultivate" the rose beds, which breaks roots and always leads to groves of Huey springing up from the broken roots. If that's your practice, you would do well to stop it because of the root damage. It's also possible there were Huey roots where you dug something up. Huey will enthusiastically sprout from a severed root. Having it spring from the soil from roots remaining from a removed plant is common and should always pretty much be expected. The hybrid Wichuranas you have coming will very likely produce the same types of suckers from any roots damaged by cultivation or digging other holes in their root zones. They are also very well known for layering themselves when their canes lay directly on damp soil or damp mulch. It's just what they do and what makes them such persistent roses, and why they frequently are very good root stocks. Kim

Princess Charlene is over 10 feet tall right now 9/14/22 in my zone 5a. It's a 4th-year own root. Carding Mill is 2.5' x 2' right now as 11th-year own root. Carding Mill has bush beauty, Princess Charlene does not .. looks very odd with a super tall cane in the middle. Carding Mill always have zillion petals, Princess Charlene has less petals (single or double) in hot summer. Carding Mill loves hot & dry over 90 F. Since it's a small bush, it doesn't demand tons of water and fertilizer like other Austins that throw 4' octopus canes. Carding Mill does best in hot & dry & alkaline region. Its color is deep apricot if soil pH is alkaline. I constantly have to top it with biochar at pH 8.6 to prevent blooms from turning pink. Carding Mill is much smaller than Crown Princess Mag, but gives way more blooms. Carding Mill is a constant bloomer, but CPM is long pause between flushes. Some pics. of Carding Mill, 11th-year own-root in my zone 5a garden in alkaline & rock hard clay. Carding Mill is very small & compact at 2.5' x 2' as 11th-year own root: Carding Mill has the nice apricot color plus zillion of petals for the vase:

What a fun thread! I'm new to this forum so I feel free to repeat what others have probably said. Campanula, you are a wonderful writer. I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts. Daisy, you too. And, right now the plants I lust for, well, just transplant me to Daisy's place, or anywhere in England. Or anywhere with good soil. A few Julys ago I visited my kids in Portland, Oregon, a place my husband says could substitute for England. The roses and the hydrangeas there were spectacular, as were the Fuchias. I can, so far, still grow roses, but it's only a matter of time before Rose Rosette gets them, as it's getting all the roses in this area. I do my best growing hydrangea, but it's a struggle to grow blue ones, as our soil is alkaline, and trying to turn a hydrangea blue results in more of a grey than a blue. In Portland, they have blue, purple, and yes, even pink hydrangeas that are big and juicy and just plain stunning. And the fuchsias. They are a fleeting, cool season annual here, good for just a few weeks in the short spring we have before the heat gets them. In Portland, I saw fuchsias that looked like bushes. On the other hand, I also love desert plants. On a road trip to California, I loved visiting the desert gardens and parks. All the various agaves, cacti, and other succulents and sticky plants fascinate me. Some of them I can grow here, but mostly in pots, due to our clay soil. Sally

Nice to hear from you Chas, I'm still here, that is I finally took another look at this site to see if they'd made it so we Aussies could readily find it. When they initially changed it I couldn't make head nor tail of where the Aussie 'forums' were. Haven't tried to upload any pictures, haven't even looked at how to do that, I guess all I'd have to do is press the camera icon below and follow me nose. Will try it one day.

Arrr that's life, Chas, sorry I haven't gotten back sooner, due to the lack of action on this ( these) sites now-a-days I've gotten out of the habit of wandering by. Anyway, if you and or Tropi.... and Inga and whoever come by, Merry Christmas from me and hope you and all have a very happy, healthy, etc., New Year.

only a couple of roses and the Rosemary hedge from cuttings are doing o.k.

The big Caffra Plum that covered half the back yard has gone and the B.O.P

survives We still say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Yea r'Bill
