Picked up a packet of bird-house gourds just for fun and to see if they would grow in area that used to be outdoor birdflights. The wire had been removed but we left some of the metal support as they were inbedded in concrete. Thought it would be fun for my greatgrandson to make a fort type structure out of pole beans and gourds. The area, about 10 by 20' is directley behind my attached garage and gets full sun but no soil. Just pure sand. Apparently the orginal owner of my home dumped loads of construction sand there to store his trailer. We dug down and the sand is a minimun of 2' deep. Sooo. since nothing ever grew there, why not try. The poles are 10' high, and the beans just loves them. Of coarse I fertilized the beans and gourds with Miracle Gro and they did well. Put the beans at one end and side. Planted about 8 gourd seeds around two poles at the other end. Shock of my life, they grew. And they climbed, all over the ground, up the poles, on top of the 3'wide roof attached to the house and are trying to climb up the house wall. I only have about l5 gourds but they are huge and gorgeous. So I looked on the web and found the gourd guy and will use your info to harvest and make bird houses.
Small yard 100 x 170 with a nice garden, 24 tomatoe plants, green peppers and last year and this, corn for the greatgrandson. I'm getting too old for all the other vegies I used to grow. LOL
Lots of flowers, love yard work, love the gourd guy. Now will go to the garden web and see what else I can learn.
Thank you,
