I am a novice gardener on a very limited budget. I usually purchase plants on sale when they are, unfortunately, often past their prime, planting them and hoping that they will survive and thrive the following year. To increase my supply of plants, I get cuttings, divisions, seeds from friends and am learning (via books from the library) to propagate plants, especially perennials. Haven't been too successful so far!
