Flowers have moved from a distraction to a joy to a full addiction. I love planting, watering, growing, watching them bloom, gathering seeds, giving and trading seeds...and on it goes. We bought our home 7 years ago and there is a 3-foot section between the sidewalk and the street at a 45 degree angle. I suggested we plant some flowers so we didn't have to mow it. That started something. The corner lot next to us is owned by the hospital and will someday be a parking lot. I asked permission to plant flowers on their 3' sectin between sidewalk and street property, too and they said yes. So I have a stretch of flowers 1/2 block long x 3 feet. I love it that everyone gets to enjoy the flowers, too. The only drawback to the 45 degree angle is that "self-sowing" rarely happens because the seeds slide off and down in the rain. I have focused on perennials. I live on the line between zones 4 and 5. I have a small garden in the backyard. I love tomatoes, peas and beans. I took over a flower garden in a children's park. The city workers would cut everything off with a weedwhacker. Now it's full of flowers. The city watering system waters it daily so everything grows so beautifully. The city planner asked if I would help with other beds. Now I have 8 beds that have not been touched in over 10 years. Oh, the weeding! Being good homeowners we took out a dead tree. That led to a wider driveway, a retaining wall and another 100 square feet of flowerbeds! I am very creative. I love to make seed envelopes, cards, postcards. I crochet, knit and sew. I cook when I have to. The kitchen came with the house or else I wouldn't have one! I'm still a newbie. Love to learn. Love it when the plants thrive and bloom!
