I am a free lance writer, usually writing for a small newspaper called the Mountain Voice in Transylvania County. sometimes I write gardening articles, too.
I also volunteer at a thrift shop that supports senior programs in our county through Western Carolina Community Action.
But my favorite activity besides gardening, is working in historic preservation. I have helped save many historic structures and had them designated which gives some protection and I run the county's archives, overseeing more than 400,000 items, helping with research, cataloguing, preserving, interviewing seniors, and filing.
My lot is very steep and wooded, with only one small rock garden that gets enough sun for sun-loving plants. I have 2 or 3 small beds in the shade and am now working on a woodland bed in the back yard (which is the side exposed to the road frontage). I hope to put several beds in there. But the BIG new project is my husband's papowawa (patio, pond, waterfall and wall). It will cascade down the hill, divide in two small streams, both will then fall again and end up in the pond. The lower side of the pond will have a patio around it, the shape of them being similar to the symbol for ying and yang. Because of the steepness of the land, a wall to hold back fill dirt will have to be built.
