In August 2001 we moved from suburbia to a small hobby farm leaving our established garden behind. Summer 2002 was the first year with the new plantings of the previous fall, and our work never ends! Adjusting to the rural gardening environment was tougher than anticipated due to the strong winds out here, but a worthwhile trade off for getting a couple of acres to play with, eh? Our focus is on perennials, we have planted both sun and shade beds, and our most recent obsession is with native woodland wildflowers.
Our first task is to finish planting the beds surrounding the house. Subsequent projects include landscaping and planting on and around the new sceptic mound, landscaping and planting the space by the two outbuildings, taking a part of the woods closest to the existing gardens and creating a woodland garden, planting a snow fence of flowering shrubs along the exposed southern shoulder of the driveway, and lastly as money permits we would also like to add a pond.
Winter of 01-02 and 02-03 were difficult indeed. That first winter, in addition to little snow cover for insulation, socked us with an early warm spell that left puddles of water in the gardens with no way to perk into the still frozen soil. Many plants, most notably our Agastache rupestris, drowned to death. This last winter we had barely any snow and a few bouts of frigid temps. These cold temps coupled with little to no insulation from snow has us expecting a lot of die off :( But, as we head into a new gardening season, our excitement at possible new additions makes up for any possible losses!
