Living in east Texas, north of Houston, I have the best luck with chinas, teas, and noisettes, and am learning to love a lot of the shrub roses from Bucks and Shoup as well. The main garden project that is consuming my time is the development and maintenance of the celtic knot garden in our meadow. We have around 200 roses now, I don't keep an accurate count anymore! I like staying organic as much as possible, but yes, if there is a chemical need, I will blast the demons out of the garden if need be! The worst pest we have do deal with here is the Texas Leaf Cutter ant, for which I have tried every organic and chemical treatment available. Finally, I have given up and hired a commercial pesticide company to come out to treat our property. In 2008 we had approximately 1.25 acres treated for the cost of 800.00. After Hurricane Ike's rains, they came and retreated for us under the one year warranty. It has helped dramatically doing this this year. I hope to be able to continue this type treatment until they give up and leave the area...
