My wife and I recently completed the total renovation of a 4-story, turn-of-the-century, architecturally significant, victorian townhouse in NYC. The project involved conversion from a 1-family to a 2-family with an owner triplex and 1BR rental unit. This required practically gutting, replacing and/or restoring just about everything (except for the many original details that were retained like pocket doors, stained glass, etc) - new kitchens, new baths, new plumbing, new electric, refinished floors, relining firepace flue, refinishing woodwork.

The entire project was managed by my extraorinarily capable wife, who also acted as our designer for the kitchens and baths, and has taken about 2 (very long) years. Neither of us was very handy or had any significant background in construction prior to this project, so it has been an extraordinary learning experience to say the least - but one which we hope to forget soon. In all we've had over 20 different contractors in the house at one point or another.

The home is now complete - in terms of the initial project - thought there are still many loose ends to tie up and many weekend projects ahead.
