We just purchased a home in the Upper Gulf Coast area of Texas and, along with it, much neglected, but once beautiful flower gardens. My husband and I don’t have the time or the energy to completely restore and maintain all of them, but we are restoring/rebuilding a few. I have put in several rose bushes this week and will be watching them carefully over the hot, hot summer that is just around the corner. I also want to plant some native trees and shrubs -- magnolia, mimosa, orange trees and holly, wisteria, lantana, elderberry.

I am originally from Michigan and am completely unfamiliar with gardening in this climate. At "home" I loved my roses and bearded irises. We cannot grow bearded iris here, or so I’m told, so I will try my hand at raising my beloved roses.

As the seasons turn, I am finding plants that I am unfamiliar with and I hope to find some help in identifying them.

My zone is: z9 Texas US
