I started perennial gardening for my bride of 13 years this in 2002, the year spring came very early. She has rhumatiod arthritis and her joints hurt a lot, so I hoped that she would get out and help me and at the same time get some good exercise in the sun. She loves hummingbirds and butterflies, so most of the plants we like are selected for them. I also made some bird houses and was lucky getting some bluebirds nesting. During the summer we really enjoyed our garden together, and secretly, I enjoyed seeing her get some exercise as she "worked" in the garden watering, cutting back deadheads and cutting some flowers for inside. It worked!! :o)
The result was a large garden, about 40' by 130' and it's still pretty empty, so hope to fill it more next year with various flowering perennials. Next year, I also want to add a water feature, and develop a rose garden along it on one side. We'll see...
2004 Update: Well last year, we expanded the garden and planted more plants by subdividing and watching for the year end sales at nursery centers, and picking up plants at flea markets. Have also started a water feature and will finish it this year as soon as the snow disappears.
