I have developed a very small 45' x 60' microclime garden that has a few plants that can survive our climate and altitude. Old Sunset zone 3 in the rain-shadow of the Sierra-Nevada mountain range, ie, high desert mountain plateau gardening. Coldest has been -28F and my Golden Bamboo survived it. I am not into xeriscaping nor desert native plants. I love GREEN and growing!

I have Golden Bamboo, a Japanese Maple, a Sword fern, a hopefully hardy (unlabeled)Azalea, Clematis, Hosta, some Asiatic Lilies, several Butterfly bushes and a few flowering trees for the birds and butterflies and SHADE for me to rest and reflect upon. I call it my Westernized Oriental Stroll Garden. :-)

I also love fuschias although I only have 2 right now in pots. I also have a Bougie that spends the summer outdoors in a hanging pot.

I only grow just a few vegetables since I am only one person. The over-abundance of what I do grow is shared with other elderly single persons like myself.

Next to the veggie garden are my tall, bearded and Siberian Irises. They were all donated to me and I don't know the names of them. Maybe they can be identified *someday*. .

I just finished the outside shell of a very small free-standing cold greenhouse after being only half-built for many years. Maybe I can get a few more plants to have a longer growing season here and maybe some uncommon plants for this area of low humidity and 40F degree temperature drops from day to night.

I have also developed an interest in odd houseplants that can survive cool winter house temps (cool being in mid-50'sF) and no air conditioning during our hot summers.

My next major project for 2006 will be installing a skylight to allow winter sun into a dark hall to winter-over my tender plants and perennials.

I love the idea of Winter sowing. I don't have that much room left inside to spare for many more plants. BUT, I can ALWAYS find just another spot!

And, in 2005, I started growing orchids and Tillandsias. Bromeliads are my next inside goal for 2006.
