Welcome to wasabi_'s Member Page
Iâm an investment management consultant who frequently daydreams of gardening, farming, tractoring and building projects. My wife does high end interiors. Weâve raised a gaggle of great teenagers and young adults between us, but theyâre all moving along and weâll soon be empty nesters.
We live in coastal SC and have property in western NC mountains where we are building and plan to eventually settle to give a go at a mountain nursery and farm. The property ranges from 3800 to 3200 ft elevation with several micro-climates. Pristine springs and streams ensure plenty of water. The climate is basically temperate with chilly winters. Our soil is reasonably fertile sandy loam, USDA zone is 6a, but mountain weather can be a bit unpredictable.
My main focus is wasabi japonica, but I enjoy experimenting and propagating interesting species from seed, cuttings or via grafting. We have a small greenhouse with plans to build a larger one. Our plantings of wasabi, thirty fruit trees, asparagus, artichokes, all manner of berries, veggies, grapes and ginseng are all doing reasonably well.
I consider myself an intermediate gardener with much to learn and a beginner collector of Japanese Maples, Rhodeodendron, interesting conifers and pendulous plants. My plan is to succeed as a wasabi farmer and nurseryman while simultaneously serving clients with prosperous investment advice, experimenting with exotic plantings, traveling the world meeting interesting people and leading a full, loving, prosperous, healthy and happy life surrounded by family and friends.
