We built our house in 1964 on a 3/4 acre wooded lot (pines, oaks, hickories, maples which are now more than a century old). I started gardening in the front woods the following year and to the existing understory trees, shrubs, ferns and wildflowers have added many native flowering trees such as dogood, redbud, silverbell; a number of Asian maples, including the paperbark maple; shrubs, such as mountain laurel, mountain andromeda, leucothoea, dogwoods and viburnums; many eastern wildflowers such as trillium and jacks, ferns such as Christmas fern, maidenhair, Osmundas, Athyriums and Dryopteris such as Goldie's as well as Rhododendrons. A hedge of native shrubs separates the front woods from the street. The house and postage-size lawn is separated from the front woods by a long low east-facing stone wall home to rock garden plants. The patio in back is surrounded by flowering shrubs, trees, native plants and ferns and looks down on the back woods home to many more native plants and some exotics such as the Asian jacks. More than a half-dozen stone walls have been built and are home to a variety of plants, most of which have seeded or spored themselves. All this takes place in the Southern Tier/Finger Lakes region of New York. I am retired from Corning and during my working years my commute was a ten minute walk up through the woods to Corning's research lab. Deer have been a growing problem and four years ago I erected a seven foot plastic mesh fence around the perimeter. In the front it runs behind the hedge and the gate is set back from the end of the driveway, so that it is very unobtrusive. I am a member of the Adirondack Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society, www.NARGS.org.
I have been retired 17 years and Jane and I between us have seven children and eight grandchildren. Up until a few years ago I was an avid sailor.
