I started seriously gardening about 3-4 years ago.And I am totally hooked. I live south of Rochester ,NY. Our village lot has good deal of shade, mostly from black walnut trees.Fortunatly I planted my garden before being warned about the curse of the blackwalnut. And have had good luck with most things i've planted. Most of my garden is shade /dappled shade. So my favorite plants tend be those with great foliage. Hostas especially. But then again I love them all.(astilbes, heuchera, ferns ,japenese maples, bleeding hearts and so on.
