I began gardening in earnest in 1993, the first spring after I moved into my current home in the historic district of my hometown. I inherited a couple of wonderful old trees (one maple and one pecan) as well as some shrubs and bulbs planted by previous owners. I also inherited overgrown honeysuckle, grapevines, and ivy, and spent the first year hacking back and cleaning up the yard. I also planted a few annuals, herbs and perennials in a small bed I created in the front yard. Each year, I added a new bed (or extended one) until, by the end of 2000, a "design" or garden structure had developed. I have been attempting to create a cottage garden of sorts, and love old favorites such as columbines, hollyhocks (we saved an ancient one from an overgrown field by the railroad tracks), hardy geraniums, and four o'clocks.
This past year, we finally fenced in our back yard (which previously had faded into an abandoned lot), and now that the space is defined, I have a new playground! The front garden is a cool garden, with lots of pinks, blues, and whites---lots of pale colors---and gets some afternoon shade. The back garden gets full sun from midday on and will be HOT so I'm going with more vivid colors that won't wash out in the bright sunlight.
