Lockhartia sp.
Dendrobium Chinsai
Dendrobium tortile

Gastrochilus calceolaris
Aerangis punctata

My first encounter with orchids was in Mozambique, East Africa, where I grew up. I have always marvelled at them since.

I bought my first orchid in Kingston, Ontario while doing my undergrad about nine years ago. When I moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland to do my masters, I left a few plants behind and took some with me (by then I was an addict). I have since left the east coast and moved to Calgary. Once again I had to leave some plants behind. I did manage to bring with me three plants which I’ve had for about 8 years that am particularly attached to. I discovered the local orchid nursery (Paramount Orchids) and it’s been downhill since. No I have access to many unusual species which I can never resist.

I currently have more than 90 different species and a few hybrids and am fighting the urge to get more. I am much more interested in species that hybrids and I prefer species that grow large, but can only accomodate small ones at the moment. Those plants that readily produce keikis or vegetatively reproduce rapidly, I love. That way you can have more plants and trade or give them away as gifts. I grow them by south and west facing windows in winter with added artificial light and outside in the sumer, on a south and west facing balcony. Trichosalpinx chamaelepanthes
