I like native trees, as big as possible, and I like to start with seed. Something about watching that little speck grow into a giant just thrills me. My favorite tree is the Sierra Juniper--the oldest trees in Lake Tahoe are Sierra junipers. The craggier and more twisted the better.

I'm fascinated by all vegetative propagation as well, right down to things as simple as succulents.

I have two gardens. One is in San Francisco and essentially acts as a year-round nursery for my larger garden, near Lake Tahoe. The former is filled with seedlings of native trees such as Sierra juniper, red fir, mountain hemlock, and incense cedar. The latter is filled with mostly young specimens of the same species!
