2003:
Relatively new small garden owner, what was a wasteland under the trees with a lot of surface roots and a lot of pests. Very wet in the cold season, hot and dry in summer.
Trying to find out how to make it livable for a plants, without going to broke:)
2005:
Located problems: heavy clay subsoil, bad drainage. Squirrels, particularly fond of shade-recommended plants.
Bulbs and cold-season shallow-rooted perennials are doing OK.
Now improving soil for shrubs and climbers.
