I'm 50 years old, learned to garden as a teenager, working with my mother who is still a passionate gardener at age 79. I love the unexpected in a garden -- though we live in southern New England, my wife Suzanne and I have taken to planting our backyard terrace as a tropical hideout. Every May we surround it with a thick tangle of elephant ears, coleus, caladiums and banana trees. We sit out there at night, enjoying a glass of wine by the light of the tiki torches.
My current projects include making old fashioned New England hard cider. I'm hoping to plant a small orchard of cider apples within the next year or two.
