I’m Southern by birth and Western by choice. I love the South, but it breaks my heart. Now the West is beginning to do the same with its vindictive conservatism, ethnic scapegoating and skin-deep political policies. What’s a body to do??
Why, go dig in the dirt!! Work out all those frustrations! Work up some new ones, trying to get the latest danged plant to grow and flourish. Call it Soul Salvation, Help for the (politically) Handicapped, or (especially for me) Expensive Experiments. Whatever, gardening can harden the softest hands and soften the hardest hearts. For me, it’s a wonderful exercise that leads me into research, trial and error planting, engaging discussions, fun, acquaintance with new and fascinating people - like those on this forum - and, occasionally (very), a stunning success that keeps me hooked.
I’ve loved being here and I’ve learned so much from gardeners with some *real* knowledge of plants, soil, water and climate - and the generosity to share with wit and sparkle.
My goals for ’05 are to complete my front yard landscaping, do something with a virtually unusable back corner, design and finish a patio area off a new addition, and somehow manage to have a veggie garden. Oh, and to stay sane. For that, I have help from my long-suffering partner, four dogs and ten cats. Sane? With all that going on! Who am I kidding? OK, so all I really want is a ripe tomato and some fun. Who can beat that?
