My garden is in a very difficult area: the dry shade of the Redwoods north of San Francisco. Typical rainfall is 60 inches per year (most of it between November and March), and my summers are very dry. The Redwoods shade my area year round, but in the summer the sun can be very hot when it finds its way in between the trees. I get very little frost, but occasionally the temperature drops into the twenties, or rarely, the teens (degrees Farhenheit, of course). I have seen snow here twice in 20 years, and one time the shade allowed it to stay on the ground a week.
My fern collection is a good complement to the native Redwood forest community here.
