We purchased our 100 year old farm house in the winter of 1998, the first year was spent working inside the house, updating the plumbing and replacing the plaster walls. The 4 acres of land that came with it is another story, it was in need of everything and has become my passion. The yard contained 2 apple trees, 2 very old over grown lilac bushes, and a yard that closely resembled a hay field. Knowing absolutly nothing about gardening, this has been a major learning experience, one full of trial and error.
The first year I spent 100.00's on small trees and flowers that barely put a small dent in the open space, then I managed to kill most of the flowers by planting them where they didnt belong. The trees also died on our windy hill because I didnt know enough to wrap them.
Sense then I have discovered the net. I have been very fortunate to meet some wonderful people who have been very generous with advice, seeds, cuttings and most importantly support when it all gets to be over whelming.
The first time I dug up a small area, threw poppy and snapdragon seeds all over they grew, much to my surprise, hence the seed addiction.
My husband on the other hand, wishes I had never got on the net, he loves his big spanse of green grass and hates to give any up, not that he has had much choice. Seeing that this isn't going to end, he receintly became a bit more involved and added some cherry bushes, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, apple trees, and a cherry tree to the mix. I haven't told him yet that the squirrels and birds are going to enjoy the fruits of his labor before he gets to, but why spoil the fun?
My next goal is to create a large pond. I really love nature and all of it's diversity, a pond should add to the visitors. Then maybe in a couple of years we can get this place certified as a wildlife habitat.
My spare time is spent with our 4 grown boys, 3 grandchildren, 5 cats, 2 dogs, 3 birds and the DH.....LOL. Course they all think I have become some kind of wierdo sense we bought the house...it would seem finding new plants, getting a great deal at the nursery or seeing new seedling bloom makes me a little over excited, according to them..LOL
