My main gardening passion has been forever-improving the tropical courtyard that we ve created at the kitchen door of our c. 1889 home. It s great being able to dine there West Indian-style on our balmy summer evenings.
Since joining GW, I ve been badly bitten by the orchid bug. I grow 40+ plants indoors on 3 shelves under lights, except Spring thru Fall when the top shelf (higher light) chids are outside. Thanks to the terrific regulars on the Orchid Forum, I ve acheived success with phals, dens, vandaceous and oncidiums and am working on angraecums now. Of course, this has led to an even stronger desire for a greenhouse, LOL!
I have been gardening in some form since my college days and have been an obsessive composter for more than 15 years. I use natural methods of controlling weeds and pests. (I make an exception, though, for mosquito repellant on myself - quite necessary here in SW Ga. and I m allergic!)
For 2005 I m planning a larger water feature for the courtyard, a semi-formal one that will look old. This project is already in progress. And I m in the planning stage for a permanent kitchen garden & small orchard that I hope to have ready & working next year. For now, I ll have to have my veggies in temporary raised-beds but this is just as well since my ambitions for a growing season usually far exceed the time I can spend gardening.
I share my life with my husband, who aspires to be a sugar cane grower (and distiller??) and 2 cats indoors, another 2 who are garden cats, and 2 humongous but very good dogs who have their own large space. I chose the name TabbyCat because a) my 1st choice was taken, LOL, and b) because I think Tabby Cats are very wise and essential in the garden.
