I come from a long line of vegetable farmers and grew up working at my familys produce and cut flower stand. My mother and my grandparents are definitely responsible for my love, appreciation and early knowledge of gardening. Now, I love growing as well as photographing plants, especially native varieties, and often hike and canoe to find more subjects (see my journal of digital photos). Four years ago, I purchased a suburban flowerless Schenectady, NY home/office that has a small front yard with part sun and part shade areas. Through trading seeds and plants on Gardenweb, I have been quickly filling some new beds along the borders of my lawn with perennials and bulbs. Last year I tried "lasagna gardening" and "wintersowing" and plan to do both again this year to create 2 more perennial beds from my lawn. I also built a new fence and arbor to grow some new climbers on. I dont have a lot of space, but soon I will have no more grass to mow, just garden to maintain! This year I am also helping my sister to landscape her new home and property. I am itching to get my hands on another whole five acres to play with, especially since I have such a small space to work with at my own home. Plantwise, I love irises, lilies, dahlias, native plants, rock garden plants, herbs, sedums .... and weeds. Yes I have a weed problem. I know this because my friends all yell at me for growing flowering weeds in my garden. I do admit to fostering a few fine specimen "weeds" in my beds and also to occasionally snagging seeds off of plants that most people would yank if they were growing in their own gardens. What can I say? Weeds can be pretty plants too!
